Award-winning Aussie costume designer who worked on King Kong and Muriel’s Wedding dead: ‘A wonderful dry wit’

Lauded Australian costume designer Terry Ryan has died.

Last week, Crawford Productions’ Facebook group, which honors the legacy of the renowned Australian TV production company, announced Terry’s death.

‘Sad to report the passing last Monday of ex Crawford Costume Designer Terry Ryan,’ the post read.

The news about the renowned designer’s passing sparked an outpouring of tributes from peers and admirers.

One follower replied to the sad news, remembering Terry as being ‘full of life’.

‘So sorry to hear this. Terry was one of a kind, full of life, a wonderful dry wit,’ they wrote.

A different person added with a comparable sentiment: “Oh Terry, it’s been years since we last met, but I’m truly saddened by your news.

Terry enjoyed quite the long and storied career both in Australia and abroad.

In 1980, his initial appearance on a movie screen was in the fantasy horror film ‘Harlequin’, where he shared the cast with actors David Hemmings and Gus Mercurio.

His skills were likewise employed across various Australian productions for both large and small screens, including the World War II miniseries “The Cowra Breakout” and the movie “The Year of Living Dangerously,” directed by Peter Weir and starring Mel Gibson.

Additionally, he contributed to the renowned 1981 movie “Gallipoli,” starring Mel Gibson. This work earned him a nomination for an Australian Film Institute Award.

Terry was eventually nominated for an AFI award ten times, winning an impressive six.

Notably, Terry received a nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design for his contribution to the 1994 film, Muriel’s Wedding, which starred Toni Collette and became a hit.

Terribly, Terry’s work was also acknowledged internationally, earning him a Primetime Emmy nomination for his contributions to the science fiction show Farscape.

Additionally, he was responsible for creating the visual appearance for the movie adaptation of King Kong by Peter Jackson, where Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, and Adrien Brody played leading roles.

Terry’s costuming work for King Kong garnered him numerous best costume nominations, one of which was at the 2006 Saturn Awards.

Throughout his career, Terry worked on a formidable 50 productions as a costume designer.

As per IMDB, Terry’s most recent film appearance was in the 2015 action-romance directed by Roland Joffe, titled “The Lovers”.

Apart from being well-recognized for his work as a costume designer, Terry was also the voice behind Derryn the Dopey dog on the ’90s ABC kids program, The Ferals.
