“We did it, Reddit!” Train replaces Vertigo for Austin

Train returns to the majors after 6 years.

Following several months of anticipation and excitement, the classic map known as Train has been added to the official competitive playlist. This change means that Train will take the place of Vertigo within the Active Duty pool for the Austin Major tournament. Delighting many players, Train makes a return to the competition after an absence since 2021, following a significant overhaul in November 2024 known as CS2 rework.

Vertigo finally banished!

Ever since Vertigo joined the map rotation in 2019, players have found it challenging and restrictive to play on this map. Despite numerous adjustments, Vertigo has consistently failed to encourage diverse gameplay strategies. Instead, it’s often labeled as an “A-site Focused Map” or a “Retake Simulator”. After several years of tweaks, it became clear that the map was beyond repair. Remarkably, it managed to stay in the pool even amidst other modifications.

During the latter part of 2024, Vertigo was the least frequently played map among all, with only 3 games even during the Elimination Stage at the Shanghai Major. If it had continued in play for the Austin Major, it would have gone eight Majors without being replaced, a situation that sparked strong community disapproval of the map. Fortunately, Valve has decided to remove it from rotation, instead bringing back a beloved fan favorite.

Train joins Map Pool for Austin Major

The significant overhaul of the train-themed map was unveiled as far back as November 2024. Although it retained many of its iconic elements like the distinctive trains, there have been some noticeable changes such as eliminating the ladder in Pop Dog and a revamp of the Ivy-A region. Despite these alterations, the redesigned map has proved popular in competitive gameplay, captivating both seasoned veterans and novice players.

The map introduced weather effects in CS2 for the first time, making it rain as players competed. Valve recently announced that Train will be included in the Austin Major’s playable maps lineup. The exact date when this change will occur remains unclear. As BLAST’s first Bounty Season is approaching within a week, tournament organizers might opt to use the older map pool, allowing teams enough practice time.
