The Most Memorable Moments of the 2025 Golden Globes
On a starry Sunday evening in Los Angeles, the grand 82nd Golden Globe Awards took place, the globally recognized event honoring excellence in both cinema and television.
Emilia Pérez has received a total of 10 nominations, making her the most-nominated film actor, with The Brutalist and Conclave following closely behind with 7 and 6 nominations respectively. In the television category, The Bear takes the lead with 5 nominations, followed by Only Murders in the Building and Shōgun, which each received 4 nominations. Denzel Washington has garnered his 11th Golden Globe nomination for his role in Gladiator II, making him the most nominated Black actor in the history of the ceremony. Lastly, Viola Davis is set to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2025, having previously won a Golden Globe.
Over the past few years, the Golden Globes have faced criticism due to a perceived lack of diversity among its members. An investigation conducted by the Los Angeles Times in 2021 revealed that there were no black members at the time. However, the Golden Globe’s voting body of 334 members is now significantly more diverse, with 60% being racially and ethnically diverse: 26.3% Latinx, 13.3% Asian, 11% Black, and 9% Middle Eastern.
2024 sees comedian Nikki Glaser creating Golden Globes milestones, becoming the first woman to solo host the event. Fresh from a successful year, her upcoming comedy special, “Someday You’ll Die,” is nominated for a Golden Globe tonight and also secured an Emmy nomination. Her 2024 roast of NFL star Tom Brady garnered widespread attention, while she has gained notoriety for hosting the popular reality dating show “Fboy Island” over recent years. Catch her in the comedy films of friend Amy Schumer, such as “Trainwreck” and “I Feel Pretty.
Here are some of the highlights of the 2025 Golden Globes:
Nikki Glaser gets the night going
Glaser commenced her speech at the Golden Globes by extending a warm welcome, referring to it as “Ozempic’s grand event.” (She also took a moment later to acknowledge the servers, who were responsible for serving the actors food that they wouldn’t actually consume.)
She made lighthearted comments about streaming platforms, jesting that Eddie Redmayne’s character in “The Day of the Jackal” was an elusive sniper since his show is on Peacock. Glaser humorously stated she’s seen more real peafowl than shows on Peacock. Furthermore, she playfully ridiculed the content on Netflix, labeling the movie “Emilia Pérez,” which garnered 10 Golden Globe nominations, as the most ambitious production to follow “Is It Cake?
Timothee Chalamet was one of several famous personalities who were humorously criticized during a monologue. When Glaser mentioned Tilda Swinton’s nomination for her role as Chalamet, he jokingly commented that his performance as Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown” was exceptionally bad, which added authenticity to the portrayal. Furthermore, Glaser asked Adam Sandler to pronounce Chalamet’s last name in his characteristic babyish voice.
At the conclusion of his speech, Glaser shared some candid thoughts, asserting that the purpose of creating art isn’t about winning accolades. Instead, he humorously suggested, “It’s about establishing a renowned tequila brand so successful that you no longer need to create art ever again.
WickedWicked jokes
Clad in a sparkling pink dress adorned with sequins, Nikki wore an imitation mitre – similar to what the Pope wears – and proceeded to sing the song “Popular”. Afterwards, she feigned a phone call where the person on the other end asked her to halt as it wasn’t amusing. This wasn’t the only humorous moment from Wicked that evening. During her opening speech, she joked that her boyfriend’s boyfriend was quite fond of the musical “Wicked”.
The sweetest speeches
Zoe Saldana broke into sobs upon hearing that she had won her first Golden Globe for Best Supporting Female Actor in the movie ‘Emilia Pérez’. Her tears continued as she ascended the stage, where she expressed gratitude towards director Jacques Audiard and her fellow cast members Karla Sofía Gascón and Selena Gomez, who were also nominated. Both Saldana and Gomez were recognized in this category.
Kieran Culkin received an award for Best Supporting Actor at a ceremony, which he earned for his part in the film “A Real Pain.” In this movie, he portrayed Jesse Eisenberg’s cousin who behaved boorishly during a visit to Poland, exploring the ancestral lands of Eisenberg’s Jewish grandmother. Due to being overly intoxicated from tequila, Culkin could not recall his prepared speech. Instead, he spontaneously praised his wife and the screenwriter and director Jesse Eisenberg multiple times throughout his impromptu acceptance speech.
In my enthusiasm, let me share some exciting news: The remarkable Tadanobu Asano, hailing from the Land of the Rising Sun, has been honored with the award for Best Supporting Male Actor in a Television Drama Series! Kicking off his heartfelt speech, he humbly acknowledged, “Perchance you’re not familiar with me, I am an actor, proudly representing Japan.” With a triumphant fist-pump, he expressed his gratitude for this “immense gift,” and shared that he was bound for Tokyo immediately after the ceremony, as there was a shoot waiting for him in the morning.
