Chris Pratt‘s latest movie is a huge hit, quickly becoming the top film of 2026. Its worldwide opening has broken animated movie records, and its success in both the US and internationally shows just how popular the Nintendo franchise is as the summer movie season begins.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opens big domestically and globally
The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned $130.9 million in the United States and Canada over the Easter weekend, playing in 4,252 theaters, as reported by Box Office Mojo.
With $190 million in ticket sales over five days, the film had the biggest opening weekend of any movie released in the US in 2026. This is a significant increase from the $146.3 million earned by the first The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023.
The film has earned $372.5 million worldwide, with $182.4 million of that coming from international theaters in over 80 countries and more than 23,500 locations. This makes it the biggest global opening of 2026 and one of the top five highest-grossing animated film openings ever. It’s also the second-biggest global opening for Illumination, surpassed only by The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
According to Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s Head of Marketplace Trends, the film’s impressive opening weekend was due to its established fanbase and the success of previous installments. He explained that the franchise has unique box office potential, building on its popular characters and the positive reception of last year’s film. Dergarabedian predicts the movie will significantly boost box office numbers, not just in its first week, but throughout April and heading into the crucial summer movie season – essentially, he expects it to be a major success.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie had a very strong opening weekend, becoming the fourth-highest-grossing Easter weekend release ever. It earned less than Batman v. Superman, Furious 7, and the original Super Mario Bros. Movie. Over its first five days in the US, it ranked fourth behind Moana 2, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.
