Men wrongly think they should be ‘passive’ when certain circumstances actually require them to be ‘proactive’, says James Norton
As a woman who has navigated through various phases of societal evolution, I wholeheartedly agree with James Norton‘s sentiments. In the wake of the MeToo movement, it is crucial for men to understand that stepping back and being passive isn’t always the answer. There are indeed situations where proactiveness is required, a balance that needs to be struck between assertiveness and respect.
Having observed the transformation in gender dynamics over the years, I’ve seen both extremes – the domineering patriarch and the passive bystander. It’s essential for men to recognize their power and use it responsibly, not just to rebalance the past, but to create a future where everyone thrives equally.
In the context of James Norton’s character in Playing Nice, his portrayal of Pete, a likeable stay-at-home dad, is a testament to this shift. The character’s journey from passivity to proactiveness mirrors the evolution that men must undergo in today’s world.
And on a lighter note, I couldn’t help but chuckle at Norton’s comment about playing ‘nasty.’ Well, James, if playing nice is no longer enough, let’s hope you can handle a little bit of nasty in the kitchen too! After all, who said being a modern man was easy?
In response to the MeToo movement, James Norton suggests that some men mistakenly believe they ought to act passively. However, he points out that there are situations where being proactive is necessary instead.
In a recent statement, the 39-year-old actor from Happy Valley expressed that contemporary society is striving to correct the imbalances and wrongdoings perpetuated by past patriarchal systems.
In a recent interview, he shared his thoughts on the upcoming ITV series titled “Playing Nice,” which revolves around two sets of parents who unknowingly swapped their toddlers at birth. The character played by Norton is Pete, a charming and dedicated stay-at-home father.
According to the actor, the intriguing aspect for him was exploring the concept of what it means to be a contemporary man, in light of the MeToo movement, as well as the endeavor to redress the imbalances from past patriarchal wrongdoings.
Based on my personal experiences and interactions with people over the years, I strongly believe that there is a common misconception among many individuals that in order to truly help or assist someone, we should withdraw, step back, and be passive. However, from my perspective as someone who has faced challenges and obstacles throughout my life, I can attest that this approach often does more harm than good.
In my experience, taking an active role in helping others, whether it’s offering advice, guidance, or simply being present and supportive, has been much more effective. By actively engaging with someone who is struggling, we can provide a sense of encouragement, hope, and motivation that may not be possible if we remain distant or passive.
I have found that people in difficult situations often feel isolated and overwhelmed, and they need someone to lean on, to confide in, and to guide them through their struggles. By stepping back and being passive, we may unintentionally reinforce a sense of helplessness and further exacerbate their feelings of isolation.
In conclusion, I believe that an active approach is essential for genuine help and support. Rather than making space and becoming passive, we should strive to actively engage with others in need, offering our support, guidance, and encouragement. This has been my experience, and I truly believe that it can make a significant difference in the lives of those who are struggling.
The other dad in the drama is a bully and a controlling husband.

In Norton’s words, he expressed that when individuals such as these exist, it isn’t always possible for men to maintain a harmonious demeanor and occasionally, they must resort to being less than cordial.
He said of Pete: ‘He eventually realises that a man also has to step up.
‘You have to be proactive and, sometimes, confrontational.’
Beginning this Sunday, the drama boasts a stellar cast that includes Jessica Brown Findlay, formerly of Downton Abbey, James McArdle, known for his role in Sexy Beast’s TV adaptation, and Niamh Algar, who has graced our screens as Mary And George.
The show is adapted from the best-selling novel by British thriller writer JP Delaney.
