Oh my gosh, I’m so heartbroken! I just heard that Gabrielle Union‘s dad, Sylvester ‘Cully’ Union Jr., passed away. He was 81, and apparently, he’d been fighting dementia for a while now. I always loved seeing pictures of them together – they were so close. This is just awful news, my heart goes out to Gabrielle and her family. He seemed like such a wonderful man.
Gabrielle shared a touching announcement about his death, describing him as a wonderfully flawed man and father. She also spoke about how deeply unprepared she was for his difficult decline in health.
I shared a really personal tribute to my dad recently, and it meant so much to put together. I included photos and videos from throughout the years – little moments of him singing, dancing, and just being with the family. It was a beautiful way to remember all the joy he brought to our lives.
Yesterday morning, my father, Sylvester “Cully” Union Jr., died. I shared that even though you might understand dementia, it’s still incredibly difficult to watch someone you love slowly fade away.
It starts subtly – repeating words or minor memory lapses. Then, suddenly, basic functions like swallowing or walking become impossible. The person you knew begins to fade away, becoming smaller and smaller. You desperately search for any sign of recognition – a sustained gaze, a smile, even a hand squeeze – hoping for a return to their former self. It’s a heartbreaking process, and it’s what he went through, but it didn’t define who he was.
My dad always had a large and loving circle of friends and family around him. He truly believed everyone was a friend he hadn’t met yet! A passionate Nebraska football fan for life, he instilled in me the importance of teamwork, hard work, and looking out for those who need the most help – because a team is only as strong as its weakest member.
My dad wasn’t perfect, but he was a wonderful man and father. He grew over time, admitting when he was wrong, saying he was sorry, and working to fix things until everyone felt better. He always put others first, caring for our friends as if they were his own children. He made sure no one ever felt overlooked or left out.
Growing up, my parents were my first heroes. I always admired them and wanted to be like them. My dad, in particular, was a fun-loving person who lit up any room he entered. He enjoyed music, traveling, and being surrounded by loved ones – family and friends were everything to him.
I’m so thankful for everyone who helped care for him in his final years, offering him love and support. Our family deeply appreciates the medical and memory care teams who provided such wonderful care. My sisters were incredible during this time, and I love them more than words can say.
It’s a strange mix of feelings – relief that his suffering is over, but deep sadness knowing I’ll never see him again. So many others have felt this loss, and I’m thinking of anyone grieving a parent right now. I believe his love will always be with me, in every part of my life.
‘PS: If you knew my Dad, please share in the comments. Our family will cherish.’
People shared many heartfelt condolences in response to the tribute, including a touching message from Dwyane Wade, who is married to Sylvester’s daughter and Gabrielle’s husband.
‘My guy,’ he commented, along with three heart emojis.
Dwyane shared the same heartfelt video on his own page, writing, ‘Thank you for all the memories, Dad (heart emoji).’
