Widow of Only Fools and Horses’ John Challis left ‘weeping’ over heartfelt Christmas gesture at actor’s grave

As a lifestyle expert with a penchant for celebrating the human spirit and its resilience, I find myself deeply moved by the heartwarming tribute paid to John Challis, the beloved actor who brought Boycie to life on our screens. The festive decorations at his grave site serve as a poignant reminder of the love and respect he continues to garner even in his absence.

At the grave of John Challis, who played in Only Fools and Horses, his widow was deeply moved by a touching tribute.

On Christmas Day, Carol posted a picture showing a holiday-themed surprise found at the Leintwardine cemetery in Herefordshire.

As the devoted admirer I am, I’d like to share that the beloved character actor who brought life to Boycie, the second-hand car dealer, in the acclaimed BBC series, passed away peacefully in his sleep last year (2021). His battle with cancer had been a long one.

The gravestone bearing the inscription: “John Challis – Actor – 1942-2021” was adorned with a wreath and a petite Christmas tree.

In a heartfelt post on X, Carol openly acknowledged that she became quite emotional due to the charming decorations she encountered.

She wrote: ‘I’ve just shed a few tears… The folks at Wigmore Abbey, specifically Steve, Andrea, and Victoria, visited John earlier today and left behind all this heartwarming Christmas cheer for him. He is never forgotten, Challis.’

In October 2021, Carol posted images from the funeral procession of the deceased actor. The scene was adorned with a woven coffin and his cherished hat, which he frequently wore.

Carol, who had been married to him for 26 years, posted heartfelt details about his emotional farewell on Twitter.

Posting on the platform, she wrote: ‘We gave my lovely man a good send off yesterday, in the pouring rain, so I’m sharing these pics with you, if you don’t mind.

For the devoted Arsenal fan, the flashing red symbol on the willow basket is a constant accessory, as is his beloved cap that he dons regularly!

I’m really grateful to everyone who has shared heartwarming messages and kind words of encouragement, and for the outpouring of affection for John.

It has been overwhelming and it’s a great comfort to know he will never be forgotten.’

After the passing of John Challis, his family released a statement saying: ‘With deep sorrow, we share this heartbreaking news. Our cherished friend, John Challis, passed away tranquilly in his sleep, following a lengthy fight against cancer.’

‘He will forever be cherished as ‘Boycie’, and his body of work will endure, providing enjoyment and happiness for generations to come.’

I shared: ‘Let’s honor John’s family and companions during this challenging period by respecting their privacy. Rest assured, there will be a time to commemorate John’s life, an event where everyone is invited to participate.’

As a connoisseur of life’s rich tapestry, I can confidently say that the man we know as ‘Boycie’ has left an indelible mark on our hearts. His unique charm and spirit have ensured he will be cherished forever. His remarkable body of work, filled with joy and laughter, will continue to bring delight and happiness for generations yet unborn.

As an ardent fan, I can’t help but share my feelings about the heartfelt tribute paid to the legendary Sir David Jason, who graced our screens as Derek ‘Del Boy’ Trotter on the iconic show. In his own words, he fondly referred to the late Chaz Chan (Challis), a dear friend and a brilliant actor, expressing his delight that the star had the chance to witness the overwhelming admiration that poured in during the 40th anniversary of the first episode of this timeless sitcom.

With deep regret, Sir David shared the news of his cherished friend John Challis’s passing. He was not only an exceptional actor but also embodied genuine kindness, a quality that will undoubtedly leave countless individuals mourning his absence.

‘It brings me joy to see the character from that beloved show receive such adoration during the 40th anniversary celebration of its debut in 1981. My sympathies are with his wife, Carol, at this difficult time.’
