As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the digital world, I can’t help but draw parallels between my virtual adventures and the real-life journey of Hannah Defoe in “The Split.” Just like my character in a game, Hannah has evolved over time, learning to navigate through challenges, finding her strength, and discovering new paths.
In the upcoming special, the character played by “The Split’s” actress Nicola Walker, Hannah Defoe, may show a more vulnerable side.
After a span of two years, Abi Morgan’s acclaimed drama makes its comeback on your screens this weekend with two fresh episodes labeled as “The Split: Barcelona“. The Defoe family is jetting off to beautiful Spain for a family wedding in the sunny climes.
love seems to be floating around, not just between the bride and groom; there’s a hint of romantic tension suggested for Hannah with the introduction of Toby Stephens as a possible love interest, as teased in the official trailer.
In a special conversation with Digital Spy, the star of Unforgiven discusses the role that romantic prospects play in her character and explains why this aspect is particularly potent.

She shared with us that she found it remarkable in those two episodes, as they featured adults showing an extraordinary level of vulnerability. Specifically, Hannah opened up and expressed her feelings in a way that is not common or perhaps even rare.
“She’s a woman at a certain point in her life saying this is absolutely terrifying and I’m afraid,” she continues. “We don’t often present that in primetime TV dramas.”
In the final episode of season 3, Hannah appeared joyful and self-assured after her split from Nathan (played by Stephen Mangan). The narrative made it evident that she could find happiness independently without needing a partner – a purposeful message from screenwriter Morgan.

As a gamer, I pondered over our journey that spanned two years, when the question arose: “What do we wish for Hannah now?” The character we’ve come to know is portrayed in this new two-part special as someone who has flourished and discovered her independence. Unlike Nathan, she’s taken a path less traveled, venturing off on an entirely distinct journey.
We pondered, ‘What truly defines freedom?’ and ‘What about being an empty-nester, someone who remains firmly in charge of their profession, yet experiences a sudden absence of child-related time constraints?’ This newfound freedom allows her to focus on herself.
Morgan found it “very enjoyable” to write Hannah opening her heart up to romance again.
She shared with Digital Spy that the main purpose of the show is delving into these vibrant women as they navigate self-discovery and love, and it seemed like a delightful endeavor. Essentially, she wanted to investigate what kind of romance could unfold for Hannah in her fifties.
Though she maintains her accomplishments and professional life, she also possesses the weaknesses and sensitive areas that are common to us all. It offered an opportunity for her character, Hannah, to portray both her strong and vulnerable aspects once more.
The Premiere: Barcelona will air on BBC One on December 29 and 30 at 9pm, with an earlier availability on iPlayer on the same day, December 29.
