Coronation Street set to axe multiple characters as new show boss reveals several ‘unexpected exits’ that will send ‘shockwaves’ through the soap
As a longtime viewer of Coronation Street, I must say that this year’s Christmas special was nothing short of emotional rollercoaster! The exit of Gail Platt, played by the legendary Helen Worth, marked the end of an era on the cobbles of Weatherfield.
The new head of Coronation Street has issued a warning, indicating that numerous characters might be leaving the show by 2025. She mentioned these departures would include some “surprising goodbyes.
Kate Brooks, the fresh producer of the ITV soap, who was once in charge at Emmerdale, has shared her ideas for Weatherfield and its inhabitants in the upcoming New Year.
Moreover, with numerous intriguing plotlines and emotional scenes ahead, some beloved characters will unfortunately be departing from the series. This exit, expected to cause quite a stir among fans, might create a significant impact on the show.
In conversations with The Sun and other media outlets, Kate shared details about their future plans, stating, “This year may see a number of departures, and some unforeseen ones that could cause quite a stir.
‘People might not expect the exits, but there are a few.’
Despite the unexpected departure, I’m excitedly looking forward to the return of some beloved characters from Coronation Street, along with a handful of fresh newcomers joining the cast.
Among the notable returns, one stands out: Rob Donovan, the sibling of Carla Connor, currently incarcerated for the murder of Tina McIntyre, who was portrayed by Michelle Keegan.
Actor Marc Baylis, known for portraying the antagonist, is said to have resumed shooting, likely leaving a significant mark on Carla, her son Bobby, and Carla’s budding relationship with police officer Lisa Swain.
In her discussion about Rob’s comeback, Kate mentioned: “Previously, Rob was incarcerated. He had made some errors in judgment. Now he’s back on the show, and we wonder if he’s truly changed his ways and realized his mistakes, but I can’t say for certain!
Without a doubt, Rob Donovan returns and creates a multitude of problems for both Carla and Lisa. Just as they believe they can finally unwind by watching Netflix, Rob Donovan appears and ruins their plans.
Kate further mentioned that Rob’s comeback is going to make quite an exciting chapter in our family’s book, with lots of unexpected events that will surely captivate devoted soap opera viewers.
Apart from Rob, Kevin, and Debbie, their long-lost sibling Carl Webster – a character we haven’t met before on the screen – is set to surprise them by appearing in their lives unexpectedly.
She told how there are ‘big stories’ on the horizon for Kevin and Debbie that will ‘build up’ the Webster clan, with Kate stating that she believes the three big clans of the soap are the ‘Websters, Barlows and Platts’.
TopMob have contacted Coronation Street representatives for comment.
In the meantime, Kate, who assumed control of the soap earlier this year, additionally shared insights into her broader plan for the upcoming year, emphasizing her intention to incorporate more storylines focusing on current issues.
She mentioned: “We believe in sharing tough, topic-driven narratives, and we have a lot more of these on the horizon. However, it’s not just about telling these stories; it’s also about presenting them effectively, making them engaging and unique, all while preserving the essence of Corrie.
She shared with Digital Spy that what truly makes Corrie special is its sense of familiarity. It’s the cleverness, it’s the characters. Each tale has been carefully crafted to preserve this essence. This core element will be present in every installment.
The creator shared that there will be a wealth of “daring, creative narratives” and “gripping plotlines” in the upcoming episodes of the soap opera. At its core, these stories revolve around an “essential truth.
She affirmed that the core families such as the Websters, Platts, and Connors will undoubtedly play pivotal roles in the upcoming major, thrilling plots, which promise to keep viewers at the very edge of anticipation.
She went on: ‘My vision is making sure that we keep people engaged, keep people entertained and keep people guessing. We don’t want them to become complacent, we want to pull the rug from underneath them sometimes. We want them to be sat at home with a cup of tea and a biscuit and have something happen that they did not expect. So expect the unexpected in 2025.’
The huge new plans comes off the back of the emotional exit of show legend Gail Platt, during the soap’s dramatic Christmas special.
In the series, the esteemed actress Helen Worth, known for her role as Gail, formally said goodbye to the streets of Weatherfield following a remarkable 50-year tenure.
However, when some fans speculated she might be written out by being killed off, it turned out that Gail instead enjoyed a joyful departure, embarking on “the first day of her fresh life” alongside her spouse Jesse Chadwick (John Thompson) overseas.
Though she didn’t pass away on that specific hour, the Christmas day narrative was filled with an engagement, a pregnancy announcement, an arrest, numerous arguments, and plenty of tears.
In this episode, a heartfelt Christmas setup unfolded, leading to Gail being hauntingly sung to by the spectral figure of her former violent accomplice, Richard Hillman (played by Brian Capron).
On Christmas morning, Gail awoke in distress, having had a heated dispute with the infamous adversary about her past. As the villain lingered, she exclaimed, “I’m not the same person I used to be!
In a sudden realization, Gail rushed to her partner Jesse to declare that she felt a strong desire for a husband again, and that their wedding was once more set to take place.
In my expert opinion, I gracefully inquired about her availability at 2 o’clock, as we affirmed that our special occasion was indeed on the horizon once more.
In a bid for reconciliation just before the festivities, Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls), Gail’s mother, came knocking on Gail’s door. However, Tina coldly refused her overture, expressing that she wasn’t wanted at the celebration.
Even so, she arrived at the venue prior to the grand event to offer her well-wishes, an act that left Gail feeling profound sadness because she had failed to endorse Gail’s choice to travel overseas and begin a fresh chapter in her life.
In a fragile state, Audrey was granted another opportunity to prove resilient over time, strengthening their familial ties.
However, the event took a turn for the dramatic when Nick’s (Ben Price) estranged spouse, Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson), arrived at the wedding, accompanied by the police. She leveled accusations of fraud against Nick and his partner Toyah (Georgia Taylor), who is also her sister.
