It’s not every day you get to see such a beloved character bid adieu, especially one who has been at the heart of so many unforgettable storylines.

On the set of Coronation Street, Helen Worth, a longtime cast member, found herself tearing up during her last scene for the Christmas special after an emotional farewell following 50 years of work.

On Wednesday, the actress well-known for portraying Gail Platt on the soap opera, bid farewell to the well-known cobblestone roads of the show in a poignant departure scene.

Peeking backstage during Helen’s final moments on set, her last words were spoken in a heartfelt scene with her entire family gathered together in the Platt household living room.

However, Helen, at the age of 73, was oblivious to the fact that numerous cast and crew members had covertly assembled for a heartfelt farewell party.

As Helen saw a large group of her coworkers standing near the cameras, she felt her eyes well up with tears when they erupted in applause and cheers throughout the studio.

With her voice choking up with emotion, she explained: “I’ve stayed here for so many years – it feels like a lifetime, to be honest – primarily because of each one of you who have been part of this community, some of you for the full 50 years and others for half that time.

Concerning those individuals who failed to inform me on this matter, dear heavens, my affection for them runs deep! I’m at a loss as to how I’ll manage without your presence, but I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for all that you’ve done.

Helen’s on-screen mom, Sue Nicholls, subsequently led a triumphant cheer for Helen while the rest of the family struggled to hold back their tears.

Jack P. Shepherd, the actor portraying David Platt, expressed about the unexpected event: “It mattered greatly to everyone involved that we were present for her last scene and could provide her a fitting farewell.

On that particular day, all the other film crews decided to halt their work, and a large crowd gathered to bid farewell.

For approximately fifty years, Helen portrayed the character Gail on the show. Throughout her tenure, she had five marriages. One of these unions was with Brian Tilsey (played by Christopher Quinten), who unfortunately met a violent end through stabbing. Another was Martin Platt (portrayed by Sean Wilson), a notable and long-standing character in the soap opera.

As a lifestyle expert, I find myself often reflecting on the tumultuous journey of Helen, a character whose life seems to mirrors the dramatic twists and turns that life can sometimes take. From the shocking revelation of her daughter Sarah’s teenage pregnancy, to the tragic loss of my fourth husband, Joe McIntyre, who met an untimely end during a disastrous attempt at a life insurance scheme, Helen’s story is a poignant reminder of life’s unpredictability.

In a memorable scene from the 2003 episode, it was revealed that one of Gail’s defining moments occurred when she discovered her husband Richard Hillman, portrayed by Brian Capron, was in fact a notorious murderer.

However, the last scenes featuring Helen unfolded on Christmas Day, delivering a poignant scene where she embarked on “the first day of her new life” alongside her husband Jesse Chadwick (played by John Thompson), overseas.

After the heartfelt incident, Helen expressed her gratitude to X and hinted at more intriguing Platt family narratives on the horizon.

In a stylish blue jacket over a vibrant red sweater, reminiscent of her familiar setting, Helen expressed her delight at having worked on the soap and being linked with the Platt family for an extended period.

She said: ‘Hello all of you. It’s wonderful to have this opportunity to say ta ta.

Over the past 50 years, it has been truly wonderful, and I simply wanted to express my gratitude to those of you who might have been tuning in during these five decades. Is anyone still here?

‘Thanks for coming on the journey with me. I’ve had a wonderful time.
