Gavin And Stacey star Laura Aikman admits she didn’t even tell her parents about shock Sonia return and shares the hilarious moment they found out – as extreme measures taken to keep her comeback secret are revealed
As a long-time fan of British comedy, I must say that the Gavin and Stacey finale was nothing short of a masterpiece. Having grown up with these characters, it felt like saying goodbye to old friends. The way James Corden and Ruth Jones managed to keep us invested in their lives for 17 years is truly commendable.
Actress Laura Aikman, who plays Sonia on Gavin & Stacey, secretly stayed at a different hotel and kept it a secret from her own parents that her character was unexpectedly coming back to the BBC series.
The crowd was on tenterhooks as it turned out that Smithy’s intended partner was actually his future bride, rather than Nessa.
It appears that she truly abided by the NDA, as her family found out she was coming back to the sitcom when they watched the much-awaited final episode on Christmas Day.
On Thursday, the actress posted a video on Instagram showing the instant when her astonished parents received an unexpected surprise.
She wrote: ‘The moment my family realise Sonia is ruining Christmas again…’ alongside the hilarious video.
As she sat upright, her mother gasped with astonishment, pointing at the screen. Then, she exclaimed, “Good heavens! What on earth is this? Why didn’t you tell us?

Overflowing with giggles, Laura retorted: “We’ve never shared this secret with anyone!” Meanwhile, the rest of her family echoed their shock with excited yells in the backdrop.
Laura emphasized that she treats Non-Disclosure Agreements seriously, using the hashtags ‘#gavinandstaceythefinale’ and ‘#gavinandstacey’.
Following the airing of the finale, Christine Gernon, the director of Gavin and Stacey, shared on Instagram the great lengths she went to keep her return a secret.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m thrilled to share that I recently had the pleasure of spending some time with the talented Alison Steadman, who brings Pam to life in the beloved BBC series. During our time together on the set of G&S, Laura was often found out of sight. The director couldn’t help but joke about it!
Sonia returned incognito, staying at a new hotel and avoiding wrap parties and screenings. This surprise return was brilliantly executed. She is simply outstanding in her role as an actress and an individual.
Five years following our show’s 2019 Christmas episode, we aired both the holiday special and series finale in December.
Among the majority of viewers who eagerly anticipated the comeback of cherished characters like Smithy, Nessa, Gavin, Stacey, Uncle Bryn, and Pam, it was Sonia’s reappearance that didn’t elicit as much enthusiasm.
Previously, a scene from five years past had viewers anxiously anticipating what character Smithy, portrayed by James Corden, would respond when Nessa, played by Ruth Jones, knelt before him.
Supporters expressed their disappointment when it became public knowledge that Sonia would be marrying Smithy, taking to various social platforms to voice their opinions.
One group of viewers commented, “I was shocked when I heard the whole UK gasp.” While another group exclaimed, “Starting to watch #GavinAndStacey…What? Is Smithy marrying SONIA?!” (or “I can’t believe it! Smithy is getting married to SONIA on #GavinAndStacey!”)
Many were upset about the return of Sonia and didn’t hold back on X, writing: ‘The whole UK when smithy walks into the office and see Sonia’ and ‘gotta deal with the insufferable sonia on gavin and stacey AGAIN?!’.
A fan posted: ‘LEAVE SONIA ALONE COMMENTING!’ and another mentioned that it spoiled their holiday cheer, stating: ‘I nearly choked on my leftover Christmas dinner when I thought it was Nessa instead of Sonia getting married with Smithy.’
And one chimed in with Stacey, played by Joanna Page, writing: ‘ou’re right Stacey. Sonia is just not right for Smithy’.
Additionally, many expressed their disagreement on X platform with the statement: “Nope, nope. This isn’t right. Smithy and Sonia aren’t a suitable match.
On Christmas Day, an astounding 12.5 million people tuned in to watch Gavin and Stacey’s Final Episode, making it the most popular television show of the day.
For five long years, viewers eagerly anticipated the outcome regarding the beloved characters from the BBC sitcom and whether Smithy finally agreed to Nessa’s marriage proposal.
In the end, many viewers praised the finale as ‘flawless,’ leaving them emotional when the much-loved series, which had been on for 17 years, aired its final episode.
In the 2019 Christmas Special, viewers anticipated if Smithy would accept Nessa’s proposal. However, after a leap of five years, it appeared that he had married her, but things were not as straightforward as they seemed.
In the previous holiday special, it became known that Smithy actually got engaged to his girlfriend Sonia. Unfortunately, the Shipman or West family didn’t find her particularly appealing during their encounter.
Audience members were delightfully surprised by the unexpected reappearance of Sheridan Smith portraying her character as Smithy’s sister Rudi, along with Pam Ferris stepping back into the role of his mother, Cath.
However, on the day of the grand wedding, it dawned upon him that Nessa was indeed his one genuine love, causing him to cancel the nuptials.
The whole family piled into Dave’s vehicle and sped off towards Southampton, a place where Nessa was readying to embark on her journey. In a moment that had been building for 17 years, he expressed his affection for her and pleaded with her to think again about departing.
Despite Nessa consistently maintaining that she wouldn’t ask Smithy for another proposal, he reciprocated an offer made five years prior. Eventually, he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him.
Later on, the scene switched to Smithy and Nessa finally saying their vows during a heartfelt ceremony held in Barry. The show concluded by displaying a moving sequence of the whole family celebrating the event at The Dolphin pub, culminating in them taking a group photo together.
In 2007, an extraordinary journey commenced, one that captivated us all. Fast forward to now, and we find ourselves at the conclusion of this epic tale. As a devoted follower, I couldn’t help but join the masses on social media, expressing my admiration for the masterfully crafted finale they dubbed ‘perfect.’
Taking to Twitter they wrote: ‘What an ending, my heart feels full’;
‘NESSA AND SMITHY FINALLY!!!! The nation rejoices’; ‘last 15 mins were pure CINEMA. perfect end’;
Among the greatest TV series finales ever, this one truly stands out. Kudos to James and Ruth for crafting such captivating characters that held our attention for an impressive span of 17 years. Bravo!
This comedy series finale might just go down as the greatest one yet. It was an outstanding farewell for all the characters. The duo, Ruth and James, continued to amaze us with their wit and humor, skillfully blending it with heartfelt emotion. Truly remarkable!
‘Gavin and Stacey finale was what I’ve needed, the closure I feel is IMENSE’;
