Gavin & Stacey star Larry Lamb recalls suffering from life-threatening illness as he shares terrifying symptoms - ahead of Christmas special

As a dedicated follower of the entertainment industry and a fan of Gavin & Stacey, I find myself deeply moved by the experiences shared by one of my favorite actors, Larry Lamb. Hearing about his harrowing battle with malaria, which left him deaf in one ear and struggling with tinnitus, serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that even our beloved celebrities face in their lives.

Gavin & Stacey star Larry Lamb has recalled suffering from a life-threatening illness back in 2010.

In his role as Mick Shipman on the series, the 77-year-old actor contracted malaria during a visit to Senegal to promote awareness for childhood poverty.

Upon his return from his journey, he began experiencing a persistent high fever for several months. Eventually, this illness resulted in him losing hearing in one ear and developing tinnitus.

He has now told The Express of his terrifying symptoms: ‘It’s been catastrophic. I’m famous for never being ill. But I went into complete physical meltdown. At one point I felt like I was dying. But the real shock was when I realised I couldn’t hear properly.

Experiencing something akin to an unprecedented bout of sickness, I felt as if I had endured the most severe hangover known to man. For several days, I battled a fever that left me perspiring profusely only to cool down moments later. Exhaustion overtook me, robbing me of any energy needed for sleep or activity.

It was incredibly noisy. Even if I were chatting with a couple of friends, it would have been hard to keep up with the conversation. That’s when I realized why individuals with hearing difficulties might feel isolated.

Malaria is a life-threatening disease spread to humans by some types of mosquitoes.

As I reflect on this momentous occasion, I found myself tearing up alongside my fellow cast members of the beloved series Gavin and Stacey. Today marks our last gathering before we gather to watch the series finale, an emotional milestone that has left us all with a bittersweet mix of nostalgia and anticipation.

On Monday, the creators of the show, James Corden (aged 46) and Ruth Jones (aged 58), stepped in as hosts for the BBC Radio 2 breakfast show. They were accompanied by many cast members before the final installment of the sitcom aired.

As their show neared its conclusion, the actors were visibly moved, swaying gently from side to side and embracing one another during a poignant moment.

In the studio, the group relaxed, taking in the tunes of Run by Stephen Fretwell. As the clock ticked down, they shared warm embraces and sweet goodbye kisses, savoring their final moments together.

As an ardent admirer, I must confess that I, too, couldn’t hold back my tears during that particular episode. The outpouring of emotional responses from fellow fans in the comment section was a testament to how deeply we all felt the impact of that instalment.

Oh, oh! I’m tears are flowing. This seems just as painful as breaking up with someone. What an exceptional group of individuals! They ought to gather together, celebrate with some drinks, perhaps even have a disagreement on Caroline Street.

During the broadcast, they disclosed secrets concerning the forthcoming finale, reminisced about cherished moments throughout the series, and delved into everything related to the holiday season.

Fans of Gavin and Stacey couldn’t contain their excitement over the cast’s radio performances, quickly flocking to a platform now called Twitter to express their delight upon hearing the actors on the radio during the morning hours.

They penned: ‘Loving the cast of Gavin and Stacey on @BBCRadio2 this morning. Heading home to the valleys later today, and it’s making me all the more giddy. Tidy!!
