Robbie Williams biopic Better Man lands strong Rotten Tomatoes rating
As a long-time fan of Robbie Williams, I must say that watching his unique biopic “Better Man” was nothing short of extraordinary! The film’s CGI chimpanzee portrayal of Robbie might seem strange at first, but it quickly becomes an integral part of the storytelling. Critics have hailed it as a refreshing take on the music biopic genre, which has been somewhat oversaturated in recent years.
The biographical film about Robbie Williams, titled “Better Man“, is receiving high praise on Rotten Tomatoes before it hits theaters in the UK.
In this movie, Jonno Davies plays a computer-generated chimp that represents Robbie, while Robbie himself delivers the story’s narration.
It’s a strange artistic choice indeed but one which appears to have paid off judging by the critics’ reactions.
In his review, Digital Spy’s Ian Sandwell awarded the film five stars, stating: “This creative take on a conventional rise-and-fall biopic stands out, despite the unusual fact that its main character is a CGI chimpanzee, with all other characters being human.
Generally speaking, reviews of “Better Man” have praised its authenticity and honesty, which stands out amidst the abundance of music biopics currently prevalent. Furthermore, audiences seem to grow accustomed to the character of the chimpanzee fairly swiftly.
The film titled “Better Man” makes its debut in UK theaters on the 26th of December (Thursday). Here’s a collection of reviews from notable film critics, as reported by Digital Spy.
Independent
Funny enough, I find facing the raw truth more manageable when delivered by a suited ape, somehow.
Empire Magazine
This film’s music biography is as wildly unexpected and unconventional as Todd Haynes’ Karen Carpenter tale featuring Barbie dolls. However, Michael Gracey manages to deliver the most surprising cinematic experience of the year, making it an exhilarating watch.
Slant Magazine
As I stroll along the precarious edge of silly and insightful, this vibrant, utterly extraordinary biopic leaves me spellbound, making it tough to resist, let alone fathom how it came into existence.
Wall Street Journal
Although it featured a few charming musical sequences, the storyline struggles to mask its flaws due to a screenplay filled with tired and overused show business tropes.
Variety
Despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles, that unusual approach proves effective, making the project stand out among the numerous generic biographies of pop stars.
Toronto Star
“Give the man points for honesty, but maybe deduct a couple for his soft spot for schmaltz… Ultimately, though, the primate-powered premise of Better Man injects a welcome dose of banana barminess into the well-worn celebrity saga.”
Better Man is released in UK cinemas on December 26.
