No time for a 'Squid Game' rewatch? Here's a refresher before Season 2

As a seasoned binge-watcher who’s seen more shows than I care to count, I must say that “Squid Game” has left an indelible mark on my TV-loving soul. This gripping Korean drama has managed to blend elements of suspense, action, and heartbreak in a way that few series have before.

In 2021, when “Squid Game” premiered on Netflix, it caused a global sensation. Developed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, this highly praised Korean survival drama generated lots of buzz on social media platforms, inspired viral trends, and even influenced Halloween costumes, ultimately becoming the platform’s most-viewed series to date.

On Thursday, the Emmy-winning series is set to resume for a second round. In season 2, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) finds himself back in the dangerous competition he survived and won the substantial prize last time. However, his aim isn’t just about escaping debt this time: Gi-hun intends to identify and defeat the mastermind behind these games, hoping to bring an end to them altogether.

Initially, the series was praised for its harsh critique of economic exploitation and capitalist societies due to its portrayal of contestants’ hardships and the callous treatment they receive regardless of their individual circumstances. The survival games depicted in the series are a reflection of the grim future faced by many.

To get ready for “Squid Game” Season 2 following a break of three years, let’s briefly revisit the main characters and important happenings from Season 1 as a reminder.

What is ‘Squid Game’?

The show ‘Squid Game’ is based on a hidden competition where participants, all struggling with debt, are brought together to play dangerous versions of childhood games. The grand prize? A massive sum of money. Unfortunately, anyone who loses or violates the rules faces a lethal consequence. Only one victor survives in the end.

Why is it called ‘Squid Game’?

The show derives its title from a kids’ game reminiscent of a squid’s shape. This game is played on a court, and it’s all about dividing children into teams; one team aims to prevent the other from crossing from one side of this squid-like structure to another. In Season 1, the two finalists engaged in a single-player version of the squid game to decide the ultimate winner.

Awards

There’s plenty more to say about human nature in Seasons 2 and 3 of the hit South Korean drama.

Who are the contestants?

As a devoted fan, I’d like to share my take on the captivating first season of this series. I found myself drawn into the lives of 456 contestants, each one clad in numbered tracksuits. Among them were familiar faces like Seong Gi-hun (the 456th participant), a divorced gambler and absent father, and his childhood friend, Cho Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo).

What children’s games do they play?

Besides the ultimate match of Squid Game, the competitors also faced off against five other lethal challenges throughout Season 1. The initial one was Red Light, Green Light, where participants were eliminated for moving when they shouldn’t have.

In the following round, competitors had to carve out particular shapes from a dalgona cookie – a sweet resembling honeycomb toffee created by caramelizing sugar and baking soda – using a needle, all while ensuring they didn’t break it within a specified time frame.

In the third round, competitors formed teams and faced off against each other in a match of tug-of-war. The defeated team unfortunately tumbled down (or lost balance and fell).

Hollywood Inc.

Netflix is set to unveil its array of original series from around the world, among them being the upcoming second season of the globally acclaimed show ‘Squid Game,’ due for release in the coming month.

In the following competition, contestants will face off against each other in any marble game they prefer. Those who failed to finish the game or lost all their marbles were eliminated from the contest.

In the second-to-last game, competitors had to traverse fragile glass bridges, avoiding shattering weak sections and plummeting down below.

Did anybody else survive?

Gi-hun was the sole survivor among all the competitors, yet he had a brief encounter with Oh Il-nam beyond the game’s boundaries prior to his passing due to sickness.

Who are the other players?

Apart from the competitors, “Squid Game” also gave us a sneak peek into the people working behind the scenes. These high-rolling, enigmatic, and masked VIPs enjoy the games as a form of entertainment and gamble on who among the contestants will emerge victorious. There’s also the enigmatic game master, nicknamed Front Man, who is later unveiled to be Hwang In-ho (played by Lee Byung-hun). Intriguingly, he is a former winner of the games and the older brother of police officer Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon). In Season 1, Jun-ho goes undercover within the games to investigate his brother’s fate. The brothers have a brief reunion before Jun-ho is wounded and believed to be dead.

What did Gi-hun do after winning the game?

As a passionate movie buff, I, much like Gi-hun, chose to use my hard-earned winnings to look after those dear to me who had suffered due to the cruel games. I retrieved Sae-byeok’s little brother from an orphanage and entrusted him under the watchful care of Sang-woo’s mother, providing her with a generous sum of money. My journey towards reuniting with my daughter in the U.S. was momentarily halted when I came across another soul being lured into those deadly games – just as I had been before. This sparked an indelible desire within me to return and seek retribution against the heartless organizers for their heinous actions.
