Sarah Abo is rushed into emergency surgery moments before hosting Carols by Candlelight
As a dedicated viewer of Channel Nine, I can’t help but admire the resilience and dedication of Sarah Abo. Her life experiences, from co-hosting major events to battling health challenges, showcase her unwavering spirit and commitment.
Sarah Abo had to abruptly end her involvement in Channel Nine’s live broadcast of Carols by Candlelight because an urgent, potentially fatal situation arose.
Instead of saying “The Today show star was scheduled to co-host the event with David Campbell live from Melbourne, before she was stricken by appendicitis and whisked off to the hospital,” you could paraphrase it as “The host from The Today Show was planned to co-host the event alongside David Campbell in Melbourne, but had to be taken to the hospital due to appendicitis.” This version is natural and easy to read.
Tonight, I’m sharing exclusive news straight from the Bowl, as I addressed an enthusiastic audience at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl during our broadcast on Tuesday night.
Since my fantastic co-host, Sarah Abo, is recuperating after her appendix surgery, I’ll be taking on the show all by myself for the first time.
I recently had a surgery and, as per my doctor’s instructions, I’m taking it easy and resting right now.
In simpler terms, hosting a three-hour long national television program isn’t an easy feat, so Sarah is giving herself enough rest to completely recuperate, he mentioned.
Campbell went on to praise the TV veteran’s work ethic, before prioritising her health.
He commented, “I’ve witnessed her commitment on the Today show, even when she’s drained, yet this circumstance calls for rest.
‘Sarah, get well soon – we all miss you here at the Bowl.’
Afterward, Campbell encourages both the live crowd and those watching at home to spread some holiday joy by sending Sarah warm Christmas greetings.
It’s not the first time Abo has faced a health challenge this year.
Back in November, the long-time TV personality disclosed that she had been diagnosed with celiac disease during an episode on the Today program.
The TV presenter was discussing ways to prepare delicious gluten-free meals with her co-host Karl Stefanovic, 50, and a celebrity nutritionist when she made the revelation.
Sarah shared that she’s just been diagnosed with celiac disease. She’s really upset about it because she adores pasta, pizza, and everything made from bread,” (or) “Sarah was recently diagnosed as a celiac, which is tough for her since she’s quite fond of pasta, pizza, and all types of bread.
In simpler terms, Coeliac disease refers to a health issue that occurs when consuming gluten (a type of protein present in foods like bread and wheat items) triggers an immune response within your body, causing harm to the small intestine instead.
For individuals with this condition, maintaining a strict gluten-free diet is crucial as it helps lower the chances of developing specific forms of cancer, such as lymphoma and small bowel cancer.
Sarah shared with renowned dietician Dr. Joanna McMillan that it left her crestfallen to discover she can no longer enjoy her beloved treats.
The expert reassured Sarah there were lots of delicious gluten-free options available to her.
This encompasses a variety of foods such as fruits, veggies, meats (including seafood), dairy products, and grains, which Sarah can continue to eat without risk.
In restaurants, Sarah always checks for gluten-free choices. She’s also capable of preparing her own flourless chocolate cake, as she shared with Karl.
Dr. McMillan informed Sarah that she could continue to savor a diverse and delicious selection of foods, as long as she conducts thorough research ahead of time.
In January 2023, Sarah replaced Allison Langdon, who had been the host of Today for a long time. This change occurred because Allison secured a prominent hosting position on Channel Nine’s A Current Affair.
Last April, an insider from the Today Show disclosed the reason behind Sarah not discussing her long-term marriage on live television.
On the show, while Karl enthusiastically shares stories about his wife Jasmine Yarbrough, Sarah prefers not to talk much about her husband Cyrus Moran.
The latest findings indicate that Sarah takes great care to safeguard Cyrus, and she has explicitly communicated to the executives at Network Nine that her spouse is strictly off-limits for any on-screen conversations.
‘In essence, he’s not fond of being in the limelight. Instead, he finds comfort in working backstage, providing support for his wife during her challenging television career,’ an informant shared with New Idea magazine.
Sarah seems determined to keep her marriage away from the spotlight, particularly following the intense media attention around Karl’s divorce from his former spouse, Cassandra Thorburn.
Cyrus serves as a broker at a steel mill in Melbourne, managing transactions between Australian businesses and international entities.
In December 2022, the childless couple celebrated ten years of marriage silently, as they were guests at the wedding of a dear friend.
Cyrus and Sarah are alumni of Monash University. In 2004, Cyrus graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History, while Sarah started her journalism studies at the university that very same year.
Sarah tends to be discreet about her romantic life, but every now and then, she shares affectionate pictures with Cyrus on social media.
A single Instagram post dating back to May 2022 captures the scene of the couple joyously celebrating Cyrus’ 40th birthday, with Sarah tenderly holding him close amidst the party festivities.
Sarah labeled the picture with touching sentiments: ‘Happy Birthday! You, radiant yet somewhat out-of-focus, are fabulous at forty!’ #gracefulatforty
