Drag queen Tayce reveals she’s been the victim of online abuse due to her ‘controversial’ appearance on Strictly’s Christmas special but says backlash only spurs her on as she vows to push boundaries on BBC show
As a seasoned viewer of Strictly Come Dancing, I must say this year’s lineup has me particularly excited, especially with the addition of Josh Widdicombe and his unique brand of humor to the mix. Having followed his career since The Last Leg days, it’s fascinating to see him take on a new challenge that showcases not just his wit but also his physical prowess.
Star from RuPaul’s Drag Race, Tayce Szura-Radix, disclosed that she’s been subjected to cyberbullying after her supposedly contentious inclusion in the cast for Strictly Come Dancing’s forthcoming holiday edition.
The 30-year-old entertainer from Wales becomes the groundbreaking first drag queen competitor on the BBC show. This trailblazing artist will sashay with professional partner Kai Widdrington, who is also 29 years old.
In conversation solely with TopMob, Tayce assertively stated that the criticism had instead fueled her determination, humorously suggesting that some critics were merely envious of her being exceptionally attractive.
‘I’ve seen hate, I’ve seen it’s controversial, it’s provocative but that’s all the things that I am I wouldn’t change that for the world,’
‘It seems there was quite a strong reaction from some individuals who felt uncomfortable due to comments like “it’s a man encroaching on a woman’s space” and so forth. I believe some people may struggle because they find me attractive, and they have difficulty dealing with it.’
She continued: ‘If my actions are causing a little anger or offense in you, then I must be on the right track. In the end, I was brought up by caring and loving parents. They used to say that as long as I’m not causing harm and following my passions, there’s nothing more they could want for me.’
‘I consider myself a decent individual, always respectful. My appearance might be distinctive, but if you find it hard to accept that, I’m sorry, that’s your issue. Any negativity or hate I encounter online is unfortunately commonplace. Yet, it only serves to motivate me even further. So, go ahead and bring on the criticism; it will just fuel my determination to dance more passionately.’
Tayce, being the first drag contestant on Strictly, expressed her feelings as: “It feels right, challenging norms, testing limits, darling.
As your go-to lifestyle guide, I want to set the record straight. I fully acknowledge the weighty expectations that come with this role. Yet, instead of shying away from the challenge, I welcome it. Pressure, in my opinion, is not a deterrent but rather a catalyst that fuels determination and hard work.
While partner Kai mentioned, ‘Dancing is all about dancing, not about who is male or female. It doesn’t matter to me. You should know that Tayce and I get along great, like a house burning with passion.’
Before adding: ‘I think it’s fantastic that Tayce is the flag bearer for the drag community.’
The duo is set to dance the Cha Cha Cha on stage to the popular tune “100 Degrees” by Kylie and Danni Minogue. They’ll be competing against comedian Josh Widdicombe, actress Tamzin Outhwaite, television host Vogue Williams, former Gladiator Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, and racing driver Billy Monger in the dance event.
Comic performer Josh, aged 41, will be donning a penguin costume for a Charleston dance routine to the song “Let It Snow” alongside dancing pro Karen Hauer, who is also 42 years old.
In an interview with The Mail on Sunday, he shared: “There’s plenty of happiness here. We’re like penguins, there’s a skateboard and a slide nearby, I have a fish in my beak. Upon closer examination, it’s a rather profound work and if you delve into its depths, it offers insights about the world in 2024.
Before the pre-recorded segment, the TV host expresses concern about potential issues arising from his comedic performance.
He mentioned that it might prove challenging since we should consider potential mishaps such as accidentally striking Karen during a mid-air incident, which could occur live on television on Christmas Day.
If you happen to take a tumble, then you must conquer the apprehensions that follow. It wasn’t a walk in the park. Those who claim it’s simple probably aren’t weighing all the potential physical mishaps that might occur.
Adam, one of the hosts on The Last Leg, mentioned that he’s joining the dance contest since his seven-year-old child, Pearl, is an ardent fan. They plan to enjoy the competition together as a family.
Apart from mentioning that he had presented her to Karen, he additionally shared that she was overjoyed. She couldn’t stop discussing her excitement, and as Karen has 4 dogs, she wrote a Christmas card featuring 4 dogs for her.
Jish also paid tribute to comedian Chris McCausland who won the series earlier this month.
He said: ‘What a guy, what an incredible human. Let’s not patronise him by saying he’s heroic, he’s a really good dancer and that shouldn’t be lost underneath the fact he’s doing something amazing because he’s blind.
‘He’s genuinely got great dancing skills. That shouldn’t be lost.’
He revealed that Chis was not convinced he would do well on the BBC flagship dance show.
The comic mentioned that it has been a while since they last met Chris, as the encounter was during his appearance on “The Last Leg” in Paris, which took place in August.
Initially, he had barely begun his preparatory training when he expressed his doubts, saying something along the lines of, “Oh gosh, I’ll be out in week one, I’m going to be terrible.” However, I suspected that might be the case, but now he appears noticeably different.
Instead of exercising daily, we’ve been working out only once or twice weekly for a month. Yet, this has been my peak fitness level so far, and I am disheartened because the upcoming holiday season will likely reverse all my progress immediately.
He stated that he won’t be coming back to participate in the main event because he’ll be engaged in a nationwide comedy tour instead.
He noted: “If this tour achieves sufficient sales, I might not have the chance to perform another one next year. However, if it doesn’t, I plan to participate in ‘Strictly’ to potentially launch another tour instead.
The special, hosted by Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman, airs on Christmas Day at 3:55pm.
