Robbie Williams sees his dreams of winning an Oscar crushed as his biopic track is disqualified from Best Song shortlist for similarities to 1973 tune
As a dedicated follower of music and film, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for Robbie Williams. After a career spanning decades, he’s finally getting his moment in the spotlight with his upcoming biopic, “Better Man.” However, fate seems to have a cruel sense of humor, as his beloved song, “Angels,” has been denied the golden ticket at the Golden Globes.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment when realizing that my beloved Robbie Williams’ chances of winning an Academy Award for his latest song have crumbled, as it didn’t meet the eligibility criteria.
Earlier this week, the song “Forbidden Road” by the singer, which will appear in his upcoming biography film titled “Better Man,” made it to the list of nominees for the Best Original Song award.
Consequently, the Oscar committee rescinded the song’s eligibility, noting that it bore too much resemblance to a melody from 1973, as reported by Variety.
The melody of Forbidden Road has been compared to I Got a Name by Charles Fox-Norman Gimbel, which was performed by Jim Croce in the film, The Last American Hero.
According to the guidelines set by the Academy, the words and melody of each song nominated in this category should be both unique and created exclusively for the film.
It’s been reported by Variety that insiders have stated that letters were distributed to the category’s voters, explaining that Robbie’s song was deemed ineligible due to it containing elements from a previously written song that wasn’t composed specifically for the movie.
The letter further clarified: ‘This decision upholds our regulations and safeguards the unique essence of the Original Song and Score categories.’
Removing Forbidden Road from consideration has reduced the list to just 14 tunes, with five of those making it to the final nominations.
With a preference-based voting method, the branch dedicated to music will have the opportunity to determine the nominated tracks as the process for Oscar nominations commences on January 8.
Earlier reports indicated that Robbie had expressed enthusiasm about submitting his song for Oscar consideration. According to a source who spoke to The Sun in October, “Robbie is thrilled not only about sharing his film with the world, but also about taking a shot at the Oscars.
Paramount is confident about releasing the song to the public and marketing it through trailers and promotions. However, it’s important to note that there are no absolute assurances, but given his outstanding track record, chances are high.
Despite not receiving an Oscar this year, Robbie remains in contention for his initial Golden Globe award next month.
In the competition for Best Original Song, Forbidden Road will be up against several other nominees: Kiss The Sky from The Wild Robot, The Last Showgirl’s song titled Beautiful That Way, Compress/Repress from Challengers, as well as both El Mal and Mi Camino by Emilia Pérez.
At the Golden Globes First Time Nominees event held on Tuesday, Robbie expressed his enthusiasm, stating that being nominated was “extremely thrilling.
He commented: ‘It feels as if I’m a fresh artist encountering novel adventures in a completely different sector of the entertainment world.’
Instead of saying “While the Take That star confessed he was expecting to be starstruck at the glamorous award ceremony filled with A-listers,” you could rephrase it as “At the high-profile awards event, the member of Take That openly admitted that he was eagerly waiting to feel awestruck by the presence of the big-name stars.
He confessed: ‘I am as excited as anybody else at meeting famous people. Honestly, on the evening, there’ll be an 11-year-old inside me going, “oh, guess what? Look who is over there?”‘
Since the year 2021, Robbie has been diligently crafting his upcoming biographical film titled “Better Man,” which is scheduled to hit theaters on December 26.
In the movie, actor Jonno Davies is depicted as a CGI monkey standing in for the pop star. Robbie provides the narration at first, and later appears as his older self.
‘The movie “Better Man” tells the real-life story of Robbie Williams, a British pop sensation who experienced an incredible rise to fame, a tumultuous decline, and an inspiring comeback. He is considered one of the greatest entertainers ever.’
In the imaginative leadership of Michael Gracey (‘The Greatest Showman’), this movie unfolds through William’s eyes, showcasing his distinctive humor and unyielding determination.
The narrative unfolds, tracing Robbie’s life path from his early years, his rise as the youngest member of the hit boyband Take That, continuing onto his unprecedented triumphs as a standout solo performer – all while navigating the hurdles that accompany immense stardom and success.
In simpler terms, Robbie explained his unusual decision to have a monkey represent him on The Graham Norton Show, which will be broadcast on New Year’s Eve.
As a devoted follower, I understand that for our biopic project to stand out, it was crucial to introduce a fresh perspective. The genre, as we know it, had become somewhat predictable and repetitive, which is why we aimed to create an extraordinary selling point that would make our production truly unique.
Upon learning that everyone else in the movie would be human while I’d portray a monkey, I excitedly thought, “What a unique concept! This is quite a bold move, it’s clear as day, it’s astonishing.” It wasn’t until I shared this with my wife that I realized it might stir controversy.
After being questioned about his feelings towards it, he responded: ‘At first, it seems light-hearted, but after 45 minutes, it becomes similar to Trainspotting – it’s like a compilation of pain and sorrow, so yes, it can be quite challenging and emotionally provoking.’
In terms of the thought that the movie could provide him a chance to debut in the U.S., Robbie contemplated: ‘Perhaps. It might not solve everything, but it could certainly satisfy a long-standing desire.’
