As a fan who has grown up with Gavin & Stacey, it feels like I’ve been on this wonderful rollercoaster ride alongside James Corden and Ruth Jones for over a decade now. Their unique brand of humor, relatable characters, and heartwarming storylines have made the show a staple in my household.

James Corden fought back tears on The Graham Norton Show on Friday as he discussed the very last line of the Gavin and Stacey finale.

On last week’s episode of BBC One’s talk show hosted by Graham Norton, the comedian (aged 46) and his co-star Ruth Jones (age 58) shared delightful details about their upcoming Christmas special, as well as their charming plans for celebrating Christmas Day.

Additionally, Timothée Chalamet (age 28), Colman Domingo (age 55), and Andrew Garfield (age 41) sat on the red sofa with them, sharing insights about their latest projects.

As the show neared its conclusion, Graham addressed James, the actor portraying Smithy on the BBC comedy series, to inquire about his experience filming the final scenes.

He asked: ‘What was it like at the end? Did it feel like the end? Were you all crying? Was it really emotional? or is it gonna hit you later on that it’s over?’

Reflecting on our final filming day, James seemed deeply moved, and though he didn’t want to spoil the ending for fans, he shared: ‘That day was incredibly special. In fact, we arranged the show so that the very last line spoken in the episode was the very last thing we filmed.’

He quipped, “A thing so uncommon that it seldom happens: On your final day, you find yourself alone on a highway in a car. As others pass by and congratulate you, you simply wave goodbye.

However, it was deeply important to us that everyone was present for the final moments, and it turned out to be an emotional gathering with many tears shed.

Apart from that, he playfully teased that his co-star, Joanna Page, aged 47, found it challenging to hide her feelings on the set during the final six weeks of shooting.

He added: ‘There was lots of people crying, Joanna Page, she plays Stacey, basically cried every day.’

Whenever there’s a moment when it feels like we’re simply cherishing our time together, Joanna might exclaim something like, “Oh my goodness, can you believe this is our final time at Gwen’s place?

“Wow, I just realized this is the final time I’ll wear Stacey’s shoes – it’s going to be emotional!” (Similar meaning, using more common and casual language)

Additionally, he pointed out that they had an exclusive viewing of the final episode earlier in the week, which elicited numerous tears.

He said: ‘We had a screening two days ago, which is the first time anybody has seen it, and that was a lot of tears, and it’s been a very very emotional thing to do really.’

Graham concluded the conversation by asking if the duo intended to catch the episode during the holiday season, phrasing it as: “Will the two of you be tuning in on Christmas Day?

Afterward, Ruth disclosed that she and James intend to spend Christmas Day watching the finale alongside their dear ones.

As a die-hard fan, I can hardly contain my excitement when I say: “I can’t wait for us to experience this masterpiece together!” And just like the previous time, James adds with a gleam in his eyes, “Of course, it’ll be with our families – that’s how we relished the last one.

This popular TV show focuses on the lives of main characters Gavin, a resident of Essex, and Stacey, from South Wales. It chronicles significant moments in their long-distance relationship as well as instances that unite their respective families.

Initially broadcasted on BBC Three back in 2007, the show titled “Gavin and Stacey” unfolded across 3 seasons, featuring a total of 20 episodes.

As well as James and Ruth, it turned Mathew Horne, 46, and Joanna into household names.

This year on Christmas Day, the final episode – the one and only – will broadcast as a 90-minute special, following requests from viewers who wanted a conclusion to the series’ narrative.

Following the announcement by James and Ruth that the finale of Gavin & Stacey will feature more of Smithy and Nessa, they pondered that the complex nature of their relationship serves as the core, or lifeblood, of the BBC series.

On the Table Manners podcast hosted by Jessie and Lennie Ware, the acting duo who also write together hinted at the upcoming Christmas special. They mentioned that viewers would uncover significant details about the backstory and possible relationship evolution of their character Nessa, played by Ruth, with Smithy.

James shared, “Nessa’s life is nothing short of remarkable, and you’ll discover more about her fascinating journey, including some truly entertaining anecdotes that we’ve included,” he added.

It seems the public has grown fond of Smithy and Nessa, perhaps because they don’t often encounter romantic leads on screen who resemble Ruth and myself.

“Instead of delivering a TV to Hugh Grant in Bridget Jones, she was selling newspapers at a newsstand.

I appreciate the disorganized yet intricate nature of the series, as well as the explicit portrayal of passionate intimacy. I truly enjoy this boldness.

Initially, the writers’ collaborators found it challenging to present the distinctive nature of their partnership, as Ruth explained: ‘Our first sexual encounter took place in the initial episode. Given that we weren’t entirely sure what the series was at the time, our approach might have been a bit too reminiscent of a sitcom.’

“Ruth reminisced about the time she and James were alone on a significant road. As she gazed at her cherished friend, she found herself telling James, ‘I loved you with every fiber of my being.’

Although the duo claim this upcoming episode serves as the finale, fans are abuzz with theories suggesting there might be additional content in store.

James firmly believes this is the end, issuing a foreboding message to his audience by stating: “It can’t continue. Once you witness it, you’ll understand.

Gavin and Stacey: The Finale will air on Christmas Day at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
