Top Boy star says Netflix show Missing You is “completely different”

As a gamer with a keen eye for quality entertainment, I’ve witnessed my fair share of shows that have left me captivated and wanting more. However, Harlan Coben’s latest offering, “Missing You,” has undoubtedly taken the cake.

In a candid conversation, Ashley Walters from the show “Top Boy” discussed his role in Harlan Coben’s “Missing You,” expressing, “The world is vast.

The star remarked, “I’ve been part of large-scale performances before, but this one stands apart from anything I’ve experienced so far.

Speaking about his involvement in one of Coben’s productions, Walters (the character actor for Josh) expressed: “It was truly exciting to be involved and collaborate with some incredibly talented individuals. Not only did I have the chance to work alongside Richard [Armitage], but also Lenny [Henry] quite extensively, as well as [Jessica Plummer]. All in all, it was a blast! I had a fantastic experience.

Responding to the experience of working on a popular show starring the culturally significant Black actress, Rosalind Eleazar, she expressed:

The actor from “Slow Horses” mentioned, “It’s wonderful how this production primarily features Black and Brown characters, and yet, it’s not solely focused on racial issues.

In all settings, the characters are free to revel and introduce aspects of their culture.

As a fellow Ghanaian, I deeply resonated with the authenticity of the show’s details penned by Victoria Asare-Archer. The familiar rhythm of the christening knock, and the heartwarming portrayal of our unique family structures through the presence of our beloved aunties, struck a chord within me.

She added, “I’m absolutely thrilled since Harlan Coben’s shows have gained quite a bit of popularity and I’m genuinely pleased about this trend.

The television show, a limited run, centers around detective Kat Donovan, portrayed by Eleazar. Her life starts unraveling when, more than a decade after the enigmatic vanishing of her former fiance Josh, she stumbles upon his online dating profile.

I find myself delving into the past, unearthing memories as I seek the truth about my father’s untimely death, a mystery that has haunted me for so long.

As a gamer, I found playing Josh in Missing You akin to encountering the Top Boy character Dushane – it was like taking a refreshing breath and pushing me out of my comfort zone.

As Dushane, I had to maintain a cool demeanor and keep my feelings hidden because he’s all about keeping things under control in his world. But it felt great to embody a character who wasn’t afraid to wear his emotions on his sleeve for once.

He commented: “Exploring Josh with Roz was truly enjoyable, and it felt great collaborating on solutions. I must admit, though, that I might have been a bit out of practice, as performing the same show repeatedly can make one feel rusty. You get so accustomed to the character that it becomes second nature. At times, you may not be pushing yourself enough.

Starting off, it felt as if I needed to gear up a bit. I had to reacquaint myself with my old tasks. It was an invigorating test.

Missing You arrives on Netflix on January 1, 2025.
