Lara Worthington declares her family ‘the new Irwins’ as she frolics with crocodiles after copping backlash over ‘taunting amazing creatures’
As a longtime observer of the entertainment industry, I must say that Lara Worthington‘s recent crocodile encounter has left me both intrigued and somewhat perplexed. On one hand, it’s fascinating to see such a high-profile figure take a risk and step out of her comfort zone in this manner. On the other, it brings into question the ethics of human interaction with these magnificent creatures, particularly when they are kept in captivity.
Lara Worthington is taking a break with her family following their return from Australia during the Christmas holiday season.
In Darwin, the model is spending time with her spouse, Sam Worthington, and their trio of boys, engaging with the native animals around them.
The 37-year-old posted to Instagram on Friday to share a candid glimpse at her vacation.
In one image, Sam, 48, held up a skull from what appeared to be a crocodile while one of their sons played in the background.
In another instance, Lara approached a crocodile closely, while in another, they all enjoyed a drink at a pub named Shenanigans.
A final photo depicted the blonde aboard a boat and wearing a wind breaker and sunglasses.
In her caption she wrote: ‘The new Irwins’ referring to the family of Steve ‘The Crocodile Hunter’ Irwin who are known as for their love of crocodiles and wildlife.
This week, the model sparked criticism from certain fans when they posted pictures showcasing an apparently harmless action.
On Wednesday, Lara uploaded two pictures from her visit to Crocosaurus Cove, an exotic reptile and marine life center situated in Darwin, onto her Instagram account.
The heart-stopping images showed Lara, encased in a perspex cage, dubbed the Cage Of Death, below the water’s surface.
In the images, it was evident that Lara wasn’t swimming by herself; instead, a large crocodile was also in the water, seemingly assessing Lara as a potential meal.
Despite appearing undisturbed, she gracefully moved her arms within the water while keeping a watchful eye on the ancient creatures securely confined within their enclosure, embodying the spirit of Steve Irwin.
The pulse-raising post was met with a flurry of comments from fans, with many praising Lara’s bravery cavorting with the apex predators.
One spectator expressed doubt, saying “Still, I wouldn’t put my trust in it,” while another enthusiast echoed, “That takes courage… I wouldn’t have the guts to attempt that!
While many fans found it entertaining, others felt critical towards the TV personality, labeling their actions as provoking or teasing the crocodiles.
One fan criticized, saying, “These awe-inspiring ancient beings are confined in small tanks for entertainment by humans.” But that’s definitely not the kind of energy you give off.
Another fan agreed with the sentiment, arguing that the animals appeared ‘depressed’.
‘100% agree,’ they replied.
“Last year, when I observed those crocodiles, I felt extremely sad as they seemed utterly dejected. Their enclosures were minuscule. It’s just not right in every aspect.
Lara shared a post, following an uncomfortable encounter between her husband Sam and a journalist at the recent GQ Men Of the Year Awards event earlier in November.
The Channel Seven reporter, Sally Bowery, introduced Lara as “Bingle” during the Sydney event broadcast, which did not go over well with the audience.
‘Her name is Lara Worthington,’ the Avatar star clapped back.
‘It’s only been ten years,’ a clearly irritated Sam quickly added.
Bowery quickly apologised for he faux pas.
‘That was my slip,’ she said.
Later on in the evening, the Avatar star was crowned GQ’s Man of the Year.
Following the red carpet Bingle bungle, Sally clapped back at the actor in a column for Seven.
Sally explained, “I mentioned Lara’s former name, not an incorrect one. It’s a name she had been known by for a significant portion of her life. This name was well-known in our circles, established long before she got married.
She maintained that Lara appeared completely unfazed by her mistake and dismissed it with a laugh, expressing bewilderment over why Sam requested her to be addressed by her married name instead of her usual one.
Sally contended: ‘Then, why wasn’t her husband present at the occasion honoring the essence of contemporary masculinity? A woman’s marriage goes beyond merely bearing her husband’s last name.’
Later, she referenced Sam’s acceptance speech from when he was named Man of The Year, where he emphasized the importance of leaving behind old-fashioned ideas.
He shared with the gathering his belief that men can express deep, unconditional, and respectful love towards others, without being bound by old-fashioned expectations or limiting, antiquated, and unfortunate notions about masculinity.
‘I couldn’t agree more,’ she concluded.
In the year 2013, Sam and Lara started a romantic relationship that deepened into marriage in a private ceremony held in 2014. They are now proud parents to three boys: Racer, who is eight years old, River, aged four, and Rocket, nine years of age.
