New Lion King movie debuts with mixed Rotten Tomatoes rating
As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast with over two decades of immersive storytelling under my belt, I must say that Barry Jenkins’ take on “Mufasa” has left me feeling rather divided. On one hand, the photorealistic CGI and Jenkins’ direction are truly commendable, reminiscent of the magic we witnessed in games like “The Last of Us” or “Uncharted”. On the other hand, I can’t shake off the feeling that something vital was lost in translation from Jenkins’ distinctive storytelling style to this Disney flick.
As a gamer, I must admit that I was pretty excited for Barry Jenkins’ interpretation of “The Lion King” lore in the upcoming sequel titled “Mufasa”. However, it seems that not everyone shares my enthusiasm, as it has received a softer rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics.
This Disney musical functions as both a precursor and continuation to the 1994 animated film “The Lion King” and its 2019 live-action adaptation directed by Jon Favreau.
Written by the live-action screenwriter Jeff Nathanson, the film titled “Mufasa: The Lion King” commences with the wise old baboon named Rafiki sharing the tale of Kiara, Simba and Nala’s daughter, about her grandfather Mufasa.
Currently, the movie has a critics’ score of 59%, which is higher compared to its previous version that only received a 51% rating upon its first live-action release. As Mufasa begins its wider release tomorrow (December 20), we can expect the rating to potentially change as more reviews pour in.
Currently, initial responses are lauding the photorealistic CGI and Jenkins’ direction, yet some critics yearn for a stronger influence of the director of “Moonlight” to be felt within this Disney production. To delve further into these opinions, you can find additional reviews detailed below.
Slant Magazine
Since it wasn’t required to replicate vast parts of the original ‘Lion King’ exactly, the movie had the freedom to reflect the creative vision of its director.

“This series of unfortunate events raises more questions than it answers.”
iNews.co.uk
Jenkins possesses a versatile skillset that allows him to excel at nearly any task, making “Mufasa” an admirable movie due to his involvement.
IGN Movies
Jenkins continues to excel at evoking strong emotions and awe-inspiring visuals, with Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. providing excellent vocal performances that further enhance this ability.
Rolling Stone
In a simpler and more conversational way: “We create stories to help us understand and navigate life. Movie studios tell stories to please investors and boost profits. This Hakuna Matata 2.0 falls right in the middle, offering stories that are both meaningful and commercially successful.
Empire
If the aim was to entertain a younger crowd through a lighthearted, non-offensive storyline, the film certainly achieves this goal. Unfortunately, it could have been made more personal and unique, but sometimes, that’s simply how movies are.
Screen International
The computer-generated images continue to amaze, and the movie’s latter half features tense scenes where the uncertain Mufasa accepts his fate. However, much like many other origin tales, the film Mufasa frequently retreads ground that was previously moving about this subject matter.
The Independent
Locating the Jenkins character in ‘Mufasa’ is similar to wandering around the Louvre while blindfolded, hoping to find the Mona Lisa by touch alone.
RogerErbert.com
Though Mufasa is held back by certain limitations, these boundaries don’t prevent it from continually moving or evoking emotion.
Newsweek
Although it doesn’t quite match the freedom and creativity that filmmaker Jenkins is known for, “Mufasa: The Lion King” still offers elements suitable for families during the holiday season. However, some aspects might not appeal to Jenkins’ entire fan base.
IndieWire
Although Jenkins’ past work and distinct artistic flair are evident, the glow of Favreau’s partial success seems to cast a shadow over every aspect of this production.
Mufasa: The Lion King is released on December 20.
