RHOA alum Peter Thomas hit with 18 month prison sentence after pleading guilty to failure to pay trust fund taxes

As a lifestyle expert with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the story of Peter Thomas’ downfall is a stark reminder of the consequences of financial mismanagement and tax evasion. Having worked with numerous high-profile individuals over the years, I’ve seen firsthand how easy it is to let success get to your head and forget about the basics, like paying taxes on time.

Known for his role on Real Housewives of Atlanta, Peter Thomas has been sentenced to serve time in prison due to his failure to meet tax obligations.

Previously married to a Real Housewives of Atlanta (RHOA) star Cynthia Bailey, the former Bravo cast member was given an 18-month prison sentence. This comes after he admitted guilt for not properly reporting and paying taxes on behalf of PT Media, LLC employees as required by a trust fund. The Department of Justice confirmed these details.

After serving his prison term, Thomas will also be under two years of supervision, plus he is required to pay over $2.5 million as reimbursement to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

In my line of expertise, I’ve found myself under scrutiny for an unfortunate oversight regarding the payment of over $2.5 million in employment taxes across multiple sports-themed establishments—bars, restaurants, and lounges—in various states between 2017 and 2023. This is a matter I am currently addressing, striving to ensure compliance with all relevant tax laws going forward.

This figure also included $1,740,000 in trust fund taxes he collected from employee wages.

According to the Department of Justice, court records indicate that instead of using the trust fund to pay taxes for Charlotte’s businesses as required, Thomas diverted the funds for other uses. These uses included over $2.5 million in cash withdrawals, approximately $370,000 on travel expenses, real estate acquisitions, and over a quarter-million dollars in retail purchases, which included luxury items from stores such as Neiman Marcus, Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Givenchy.

Thomas plead guilty to the charge over the summer but was only sentenced on Thursday.

The prosecution aimed for Thomas to serve a two-year prison term, but his lawyer, C. Melissa Owen, argued vehemently for a sentence of one year and a day, claiming that Thomas expressed deep regret for his actions. This was reported by the Baltimore Banner.

The reality alum said he was prepared to ‘face the music’ in video posted the day before his sentencing.

Poignantly, Thomas made the announcement on the 50th anniversary living in the United States.

Tomorrow, I will attend a hearing at the U.S. Federal Court in Charlotte, North Carolina, to address the charges against me.

As a lifestyle advisor, I’d put it this way: “For more than a decade, I’ve been habitually delaying my business tax payments, inconsistently meeting my financial obligations.

It seemed as though setting up a payment plan and making payments would resolve the issue, but it appears that withholding taxes function differently in this case.

I’ve been declared responsible for the offense. Instead of being declared not guilty, I admitted guilt, and as a result, I will need to spend some time in detention.

Thomas urged other small business owners to avoid making the same mistakes he did.

Neglecting consistent payment of your withholding taxes can lead to legal consequences, including imprisonment. The U.S. government takes this matter seriously and does not tolerate non-compliance.

If you can’t afford to regularly manage your payroll and pay it before your rent, since failure to do so might lead to eviction, you won’t end up in jail. However, neglecting to pay your withholding taxes to the U.S. government could result in imprisonment. Understood?

Thomas seemed to acknowledge the results of his decisions and found tranquility in their outcome.

‘Tomorrow I’m taking the flame away from all you bloggers out there. Tomorrow I’m in federal court and by tomorrow afternoon this time I’ll know my fate.’

‘I need to face the consequences because I made a mistake. That means I have to apologize and deal with the repercussions. My parents aren’t happy about this, and I can imagine my dad disapproving from beyond. My mom even wanted to come see me in Charlotte, North Carolina, but I asked her not to because I don’t want her to witness me in this state.’

‘Pay those withholding taxes. Don’t fall in the same situation I have.’

Thomas and Bailey got married during a ceremony back in 2010, which was broadcast on the third season of the Bravo series.

Thomas and Bailey parted ways back in 2016 following a three-year union, and their divorce became official the following year in 2017.

He’s had other brushes with the law, including a recent arrest for DUI.
