James Gunn defends including Superman’s red trunks
As a lifelong comic book enthusiast who has watched Superman evolve through the decades, I couldn’t be more thrilled with James Gunn‘s commitment to bringing back the Man of Steel’s iconic red trunks. It’s a decision that harkens back to the character’s roots while still feeling fresh and relevant for today’s audiences.
As a die-hard Superman fan, I proudly stand by director James Gunn’s choice to incorporate the classic red briefs of our beloved superhero.
The forthcoming movie is set to debut as the inaugural production within the expanded DC Universe, featuring David Corenswet portraying Clark Kent/Superman alongside Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane.
In contrast to Superman’s iconic red briefs being a consistent part of his attire, Zack Snyder deviated from the norm when portraying Henry Cavill in the role, choosing not to include them.
Nevertheless, the garment reappears in Gunn’s “Superman,” a choice driven by the latest embodiment of the Man of Steel himself.
In various iterations, we tried them out, and even tested some with and without trunks. One point David made during this process was that Superman should aim to reassure children rather than scare them, as shared with Gizmodo.
“He’s an alien. He’s got these incredible powers. He shoots beams out of his eyes… He’s this incredibly powerful, could be considered scary, individual and he wants people to like him.”
The filmmaker and joint CEO of DC Studios went on to say, “He aims to represent optimism and encouragement. Thus, he adopts the attire of a professional wrestler.
I admire his style because it exudes an aura of confidence that instills hope and positivity in others, which truly resonates with me.
It seems rather absurd to attempt to portray Superman’s costume as entirely serious, given that he is a superhero. After all, he was the original, vibrantly colored character, and that’s part of his essence!
In the ensemble of Superman, we have Nicholas Hoult taking on the role of Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced portraying Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion appearing as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Anthony Carrigan donning the role of Rex Mason/Metamorpho, Wendell Pierce playing Perry White, and Pruitt Taylor Vince essaying Jonathan Kent.
Superman will be released in cinemas on July 11, 2025.
