Chess joins Esports World Cup 2025 with Magnus Carlsen as Global Brand Ambassador

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for chess and a deep-rooted appreciation for the evolution of gaming, I find myself utterly thrilled at the prospect of Chess gracing the Esports World Cup 2025. A grandmaster like Magnus Carlsen, who has single-handedly brought chess to the mainstream audience, stepping forward as the Global Ambassador, is nothing short of inspiring.

The Esports World Cup 2025 will be a part of the Champions Chess Tour next year.

The Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) and Chess.com have entered into a long-term collaboration. This partnership will make Chess more prominent, with its debut at the Esports World Cup 2025. Notably, Magnus Carlsen, a former chess champion, has been appointed as the Global Ambassador for this event, helping to showcase Chess on a global scale.

Chess to be inducted into the Esports World Cup 2025

Magnus Carlsen, Grandmaster, expressed his excitement about Chess being included in some of the largest global esports tournaments. He believes this collaboration presents a fantastic chance to expand the game by exposing it to new spectators and motivating future players. Being part of the esports community offers an incredible opportunity for Chess to tap into a vast audience of esports enthusiasts.

Magnus Carlsen has been one of the most prominent names in World chess. He was instrumental in bringing the near 1,500-year-old game to the mainstream audience. Not only is he one of the biggest names and winners in Chess, but also a great entertainer. This allows him to captivate his audience at a level unseen in Chess so far.

Ralf Reichert, CEO of the Esports World Cup Foundation, expressed great excitement about incorporating Chess, a game with a 1,500-year history, into the Esports World Cup. He explained that this move symbolizes the natural evolution of games, as they transition from physical boards to digital screens, while maintaining their essential competitive essence. With its deep roots, worldwide popularity, and vibrant tournament scene, Chess is an ideal match for our aim to unite the most beloved games and their dedicated fan bases under a single competitive banner.

How will Chess work at Esports World Cup 2025?

In 2025, there may be minor adjustments to how chess is played at the Esports World Cup. Notably, this event will form a part of the Champions Chess Tour (CCT). The winner of this tournament will secure their place in the Finals, which are scheduled to take place in Riyadh.

Games will follow the 10-minute plus 0-second increment rule, which speeds up matches without sacrificing the strategic depth and excitement that characterizes Chess. In case of a draw after regular play, an Armageddon game will serve as a deciding match.

In Armageddon chess, the rules are similar to standard chess, but there are two crucial differences:

1) Black has draw odds, meaning that if Black draws the game, then they win.

2) In Armageddon games, Black begins with fewer minutes on the clock than White does. These games are used as a decisive tiebreaker when multiple draws occur throughout the course of a match, acting as a final resolution.

The twelve leading players from the CCT will compete in the EWC International Chess Competition. This global event unfolds at the end of July and showcases the crème de la crème of Chess. The competition runs from July 31 to August 3, specifically in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Boasting a $1.5 million prize purse, the EWC stands as the zenith of Chess as an eSport.
