As a dedicated fan who’s been following Bluey since its debut in 2018, I must admit, the recent announcement of a full-length feature film and the shift to CG animation has stirred a whirlwind of emotions within me! On one hand, the prospect of a Bluey movie is beyond exciting – it’s like a dream come true for us Heelers enthusiasts. But on the other, the thought of our beloved 2D characters getting a makeover brings up some “trifficult” feelings.

This week, exciting events are unfolding in the world of Bluey. Just yesterday, enthusiasts were informed that the adored Australian animated series is slated to debut its first full-length movie in 2027. This undoubtedly marks a significant shift for our beloved canine protagonist, but it also brings along some challenging changes too.

As a dedicated Bluey fan, I must share some upcoming changes in the show that might stir some feelings among us. Besides the significant evolution, there are two more adjustments on the horizon which could raise eyebrows within our massive fandom. Firstly, the creator of Bluey, Joe Brumm, is stepping back from his role on the animated series to delve deeper into the film version. Secondly, it has been announced that the characters will undergo a transformation to a “CG” style.

Bluey’s Big Makeover

It’s fair to assume that not many people are unfamiliar with “Bluey,” as this animated series by Heelers has been a significant part of our lives since 2018. With Disney’s collaboration, it has become an enduring presence in our homes. The show’s distinctive visual style also plays a role in making it so memorable.

Just like beloved characters such as Mickey Mouse and Pikachu, Bluey is instantly recognizable due to its unique design. However, this may soon change with an upcoming film, as a shift from the show’s traditional 2D format has been announced. In a post on the show’s blog, it was confirmed that the project will instead adopt a fresh, entirely new style.

Amber Naismith, an esteemed animation producer who has worked on hits like ‘Happy Feet’, ‘The Lego Movie’, and ‘The Lego Batman Movie’, will produce the upcoming CG animated film. Richard Jeffery, known for his work on the ‘Bluey’ series, is set to co-direct. Joe Brumm takes on the role of executive producer, with Charlie Aspinwall, Daley Pearson from Ludo Studio, and Justine Flynn from BBC Studios joining him.

From one perspective, tinkering with Bluey’s formula seems somewhat risky on the surface. However, considering the track record of the show’s creators, it’s also reasonable to trust that our beloved canine character is being handled competently. It’s a matter of patience and anticipation as we wait to see how this development will shape these characters in new ways.

That all being said, there is still one nugget of hope we dedicated Bluey buffs can hold onto, and that’s knowing that Joe Brumm is devoting his full time and energy to make sure his creation is best represented on film. Even so, there is still some natural anxiety surrounding the show’s future.
