Disney star responds as trans storyline is cut from new series
As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the virtual worlds of video games, I can’t help but draw parallels between my own journey and that of Chanel Stewart. We both strive to bring our unique stories and experiences into the realm of entertainment, hoping to inspire others and make a positive impact.
Actor Chanel Stewart, who plays the role of “Win or Lose,” has addressed the recent decision by Disney to eliminate a transgender narrative from an upcoming Pixar production.
The upcoming animated show, slated for release on Disney+ in February, narrates the story of a middle school softball team as they approach their championship match. Each episode provides a unique viewpoint, focusing on a different team member.
It’s been confirmed that Disney has scrapped the planned storyline involving a transgender character from the movie “Win or Lose.
In relation to cartoons designed for young viewers, a representative from Disney stated that they understand that numerous parents might want to handle delicate topics with their kids according to their own pace and comfort. (This was shared with The Hollywood Reporter.)
Stewart, a transgender actor who provided the voice for a character, has spoken out about Disney’s decision, expressing to Deadline her feelings of being “disappointed” by it.
She expressed her disappointment but also shared her initial enthusiasm upon receiving the script, as it presented an opportunity to inspire and support fellow transgender youth. Recognizing the significance of this discussion, she emphasized that trans narratives are vital and deserving of attention.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can confirm that certain dialogues in one of my favorite episodes which touched upon my character’s gender identity were unfortunately cut. However, I was reassured by Disney that my role remains significant and deeply ingrained within the series.
She clarified that her character has been changed to be a cisgender girl who is straight. Essentially, that’s the only detail they provided to her about the character development, and she remains a part of the series.
Simultaneously, Stewart’s mother expressed to Deadline that the decision by Disney was “disheartening” since this relates to her daughter’s life, and she feels strongly that it’s significant not to conceal this aspect of it.
She added: “Some parents might not yet feel prepared for this talk, but this is our reality – we need to embrace inclusivity. Everyone merits recognition.
The experience seemed akin to yet another hurdle for the LGBTQ community, as it’s particularly challenging for transgender adolescents and transgender individuals in general.
Win or Lose will premiere on Disney+ on February 19, 2025.
