Netflix fans devastated after show is brutally axed
As a longtime fan of heartfelt and hilarious comedies, I find myself deeply saddened by the cancellation of Girls5Eva. Having grown up watching shows like Sex and the City and M*A*S*H, this series resonated with me as it tackled themes of friendship, aging, and the struggles women face in their personal and professional lives – all while keeping audiences laughing with its clever wit and sharp humor.
Netflix fans were left devastated after one particular show was axed this week.
Unfortunately, the cherished television show has been terminated following its third season, and it won’t return for a fourth, as reported by Variety on Tuesday.
The first two seasons of the musical comedy originally premiered and streamed on Peacock.
Last year, as Peacock opted against further development, Netflix made the decision to keep the show alive and ordered a third season to stream on their platform instead.
The last season of Girls5Eva aired at the beginning of the year in March.
The comedy series was developed by Meredith Scardino and overseen by Tina Fey – she was among the illustrious, high-profile actors gracing the red carpet at the New York City debut this previous spring.
Girls5Eva tells the tale of a ’90s girl band that gets a surprising opportunity to restart their musical journey, as they strive to rekindle their careers from where they left off.
The one-hit-wonder band get back together after a young rapper samples their song.
In the show, Sara Bareilles, Busy Philipps, Paula Pell, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Ashley Park were the stars, each portraying a member of the girl group.
After the announcement from Netflix, Philipps, 45, took to Instagram to share her thoughts.
She started off by saying, “Indeed, 2024 has been quite a challenging year for me. Some moments have been more difficult than others, to be honest.” Alongside a screenshot of the news, she added this lengthy caption.
The actress then gushed about working on the show with her fellow cast and crew members.
She expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the remarkable series, the girls who have become like sisters to her, for Netflix extending their time to perform together a bit more, and for everyone at Universal and Peacock who strongly supported their show, in her post.
Furthermore, she acknowledged the brilliance of Meredith Scardino, Jeff Richmond, Eric Gurian, and her personal idol Tina Fey, who played significant roles in the project.
In a touching tribute, Philipps expressed that she can’t imagine her existence or happiness without this series, which brought boundless delight during the most challenging period of her life.
In my own words, bursting with passion, “I’m utterly smitten with every moment of my work. At times, it seems like a challenge beyond the realm of possibility, yet here I am, standing strong and determined to conquer!
“In any case, doesn’t it remind us of all the wonderful things in life? I love you forever,” accompanied by a red heart emoji.
Philipps first revealed the news on her podcast, Doing Her Best, earlier this month.
‘It’s dead,’ she told her podcast listeners in an episode that aired on December 4.
‘Yeah, I’m just saying it because f*** it,’ she said. ‘If Netflix won’t, I will.’
She continued: ‘I guess not enough people watched it or watched it in the way that counts, or I don’t know.
‘I actually just don’t know,’ she told her podcast guest Danny Pellegrino.
Philipps clarified that Netflix has not disclosed details regarding the deal structure when the series moved to Peacock for its second season, and they have also remained silent about whether the show will come to an end altogether.
‘So there’s time. I don’t think it’ll ever be dead-dead,’ she said. ‘The characters are too good.’
Philipps went on to say, “I’ve playfully suggested ideas to the cast, such as performing at Radio City Music Hall or transforming it into a live stage production – maybe even a musical! Who knows, perhaps one day on Broadway.
Additionally, she offered her thoughts on the title of the series, suggesting that possibly this was a contributing factor to its low viewership.
I believe the name Girls5Eva is fantastic and perfectly fitting, yet there’s a possibility that it might unintentionally exclude men, such as straight males.
Later on, she asked this question: ‘Has any research been conducted on whether titles that emphasize female leads impact the popularity of television series?’
After hearing the unfortunate announcement that the comedy series had been cancelled, its fans expressed their feelings on social media platforms.
On what was once known as Twitter, a fan expressed that having the show get cancelled once more had turned out to be the most dreadful day.
Another user tweeted in gushing praise of the series and said the cancellation is a ‘huge loss.’
The tweet conveyed that ‘Girls5eva’ symbolized hope, joy, taking chances, cherishing those dear to you, the strength of friendship, and women having the freedom to do whatever they desire, whenever they desire. Its cancellation represents a significant loss as it touched upon many crucial themes.
Another pointed out the unjust lack of popularity.
The fan expressed that it would have been fantastic if ‘Girls5eva’ had received some recognition in the form of Emmy or Golden Globe awards this year. Such recognition could have boosted viewership, but unfortunately, neither the streaming platform (Netflix) nor critics seemed to promote it at all.
‘Too bad because it was a really good comedy,’ the fan added.
Regarding the sad news, one X user simply tweeted: Girls5Eva.. you will be missed..’
