'Skeleton Crew' takes a dark turn in episode four (playtime is over)

As a gamer who has spent countless hours navigating galaxies far, far away in various Star Wars games, I must say that the latest chapter of Disney’s Star Wars: Skeleton Crew has truly caught my attention. The eerie similarity between At Attin and At Acharan brought back memories of those infamous Star Wars map glitches where you’d stumble upon a planet that looked suspiciously like your kitchen table.

In the most recent installment of Disney’s “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew”, our band of space-faring youths and their unpredictable comrade find themselves on a world strikingly similar to At Attin. Yet, the presence of feuding tribes and forlorn ruins that echo their home planet set the stage for a grim journey ahead.

Following the episode prior, Wim, Neel, Fern, and KB managed to snatch coordinates from Alia Shawkat’s owlish Kh’ymm character. Subsequently, they were transported to a planet that bore striking similarities to a desolate At Attin. However, the reality turned out to be more bizarre than merely a look-alike world ravaged by hostile marauders.

WARNING: Spoilers for Skeleton Crew beyond this point!

“Can’t Say I Remember At Attin”

As the children step foot on the surface of the planet (later identified as At Acharan), another segment of this region in the cosmos detaches. Meanwhile, the spectators are engrossed in pondering if they’ve experienced a temporal shift, oblivious to the sinister schemes unfolding behind the scenes.

In this episode, the children align with a band of marauders known as the Troik, a youth-led group controlled by a few adults, who are embroiled in a territorial dispute following the theft of their livestock by a rival clan. The situation allows for the growth and transformation of the main characters (notably Neel), but it’s not the development that captures our interest.

During their voyage back, the SM-33 character, played by Nick Frost, often utters the phrase “I don’t recall At Attin.” It turns out that this recurring statement from the aged pirate robot wasn’t actually a malfunction, but rather a deliberate command.

In the ancient ruins, it’s revealed that At Attin is one of several missing planets, and its coordinates have been destroyed. Under the direction of his former captain, SM-33 was ordered to destroy any remnants of At-Attin’s whereabouts… and tear any witnesses apart.

In the last episode, we only scratched the surface of the Republic’s Treasures, but there seems to be more than just SM-33’s lethal order at play. It’s possible that At-Attin was spared from the broader Star Wars narrative for a specific reason.

According to this writer’s perspective, Jude Law’s character, Jod Na Nawood, along with his band of unwilling explorers, appears set to unearth an intragalactic secret surrounding the vanished planets. This mystery transcends mere Republic credits and seems connected to At-Attin, which bears a striking resemblance to Earth that is unusual for the galaxy at such great distances.

Based on what’s been shown so far, the Jewels of the Republic seem to be further from the fantastical, prosperous cities depicted in myths, resembling more the dystopian visions of George Orwell rather than the utopias envisioned by George Lucas. As any seasoned sci-fi enthusiast would recognize, beneath the gleaming facades of all utopias lie hidden dangers, and At Attin is no exception.

Regarding what exactly that involves, only a specific enigmatic pirate captain has the answer, but there’s far more at play than mere treasure. Whether the damaged old robot was being manipulated or voluntarily involved, SM-33 has inadvertently triggered a potential massive conspiracy, and we can’t wait to see how it unfolds.

Once again, Skeleton Crew shows a genuine love for the classic ’80s kids’ films that came before, and there are definitely designs and sequences that harken back to Return of the Jedi (1983) and Temple of Doom (1984), but it also knows how to utilize dark and scary elements to make an impact. This Star Wars fan certainly isn’t going to forget “tear em’ apart” anytime soon.

All four episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew are currently available on Disney+.
