Garrett Wang was told he'd been cast on Star Trek: Picard

As a dedicated Trek fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment when it comes to Harry Kim’s absence in Star Trek: Picard. Having grown up with Garrett Wang’s portrayal of this beloved character, it’s hard not to feel a sense of nostalgia and longing for more of his presence in the Star Trek universe.

In the finale of Star Trek: Picard, there wasn’t a single appearance by Harry Kim, despite there being a role for him. As reported by Trekmovie, Garrett Wang stated that his agent informed him he had been cast for the third season of Picard.

Initially, Captain Harry Kim was slated to assume Admiral Shelby’s role [Elizabeth Deneny], while Wang was initially planned to appear in three episodes. However, these plans were gradually reduced to two and then one episode. Despite the reduction, Wang was still included in the script. Even his manager informed him that he needed to be in Los Angeles for a costume fitting for Picard.

As per Wang’s account, Jeri Ryan (the actress who portrayed Seven of Nine) mentioned that she had come across a script bearing Harry’s name initially. Subsequently, some modifications were made to the script. Once these changes were implemented, Harry’s name was no longer visible in the revised script.

Wang confessed that he felt deeply downhearted when the chance slipped away, and he was “essentially weeping into my own garment.” Being a die-hard Star Trek fan, Wang had eagerly anticipated the latest series, including Lower Decks, and since the first season, he had been hoping for a call from creator Mike McMahan to reinstate Harry. Finally, his wish came true, and Harry Kim appeared in the ninth episode of season five. However, as the events transpired outside the Main timeline, Harry Kim remains an ensign according to canon.

Wang eagerly awaits a call from the Star Trek: Prodigy team, hoping it will lead to his character’s comeback and potentially secure the promotion he has been aspiring for all this time. “I hope I get a call about working on Prodigy, it would be great,” Wang expressed. If Prodigy gets renewed for a third season, this development is definitely worth pursuing. Harry Kim’s live-action return and promotion are long overdue.
