James Wan to executive produce TV version of survival game Pacific Drive
As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the announcement of James Wan executive producing a television adaptation of Pacific Drive has me thoroughly excited! Having grown up exploring the eerie landscapes of survival horror games like Silent Hill and Resident Evil, the retro-punk style and sci-fi elements of Pacific Drive immediately piqued my interest.
James Wan is set to oversee a television version of the highly successful independent video game “Pacific Drive,” originally created by Cassandra Dracott and developed by Ironwood Studios. As revealed exclusively by Variety, Wan’s production company, Atomic Monster, will be responsible for creating the series, with Wan himself serving as executive producer alongside Michael Clear and Rob Hackett.
Pacific Drive is a first-person survival game heavily influenced by science fiction, setting the player in a deserted region of Washington state. On foot or in an old station wagon, players must forage the surroundings while steering clear of mysterious abnormalities and other eerie beings.
As they explore the terrain, they uncover new sections on their map and start to solve the riddles of the region, depicted as a fictionalized take on the Olympic Peninsula during 1998. Unlike the actual peninsula, the game’s “Olympic Exclusion Zone” has been entirely deserted.
As a gamer, I’d describe Pacific Drive as a unique blend of retropunk aesthetic and base-building mechanics. It offers an immersive experience where you can personalize and enhance your rides in a specialized garage. The game straddles the line between sci-fi and survival horror genres, providing a chilling yet captivating experience that I find intriguing.
Other than Wan’s participation, not much information was disclosed regarding the television show itself. On the other hand, Pacific Drive has been nominated for Best New Independent Game in this year’s Game Awards.
These days, gaming has never been more prevalent and this announcement is simply one of numerous video game adaptations under development. The chilling tale of “Until Dawn” will soon grace the big screen in 2025, while there are also plans to transform games like “Outlast” and “Dead by Daylight” into spine-tingling horror films as well.
Currently, Wan and Atomic Monster are keeping themselves occupied with numerous upcoming projects. The horror filmmaker is back in action as producer for the final installment of The Conjuring series, titled The Conjuring: Last Rites. After wrapping up filming, this movie is scheduled to hit theaters on September 5, 2025.
Atomic Monster, the production company behind the recently aired horror series on Peacock titled “Teacup”, is also set to create movies in 2025 such as “The Monkey” and “M3GAN 2.0”.
