‘Bluey’ creator Joe Brumm steps away from beloved show
As a dedicated fan who has grown up with Bluey by my side since her debut in 2018, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia as Joe Brumm, the show’s brilliant creator, announced his departure from the TV series. It feels like bidding farewell to an old friend who has been there through thick and thin, from Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons to stage adaptations, and everything in between.
In line with the unveiling of the new movie, Joe Brumm, Bluey’s creator, posted an update in a heartfelt message to the show’s vast fan community. Despite its international acclaim, Brumm announced his intention to step down after having produced one of the top-performing animated series available for streaming today.
If you haven’t been secluded since 2018, it’s likely that you’re familiar with Bluey. This popular modern animated character has not only gained immense recognition but also secured a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon and a stage adaptation. However, the creator behind this beloved character is stepping back from the project. Let’s explore the reasons for this decision.
Brumm Says Bye to Bluey
On the official blog of “Bluey”, Brumm openly communicated a letter to the fanbase, revealing his role in the movie and his challenging choice to depart from the television series. He mentioned that the episode titled “The Sign” serves as a heartfelt farewell to fans, stating it as his last contribution to “Bluey”.
Brumm goes into extensive detail in his letter, but one portion truly stands out to this writer, and it should undoubtedly nab the attention of all die-hard Bluey buffs.
In the letter, Brumm writes
Bluey has profoundly impacted my life. Being involved with it has been an incredibly rewarding experience, one that words struggle to fully capture. Letting go of it when it’s so successful might seem odd to some, but I find myself struggling to reconnect genuinely with the four to six-year-old mindset and write authentically in that context for now.
My ‘Bluey’ team, along with everyone who contributes to my creative ventures, fully support my choice. Collaborating with such an exceptional group during my animation journey has been the pinnacle experience, and I hope that working on Bluey adds a sense of accomplishment and pride to their resumes.
If you found yourself choked up hearing about this news, know that you’re not the only one. A creator leaving their cherished series often has a lasting impact on the production, much like we saw with SpongeBob SquarePants or The Muppets.
Despite all that has been discussed, there remains a glimmer of optimism looking forward, and rest assured, Brumm is here to stay, at least for the moment. With the unveiling of Bluey: The Movie, its creator has made it clear that his main commitment lies with the production of this film as he concludes his correspondence.
Brumm writes,
As a devoted fan, I want to clarify something: This isn’t about saying goodbye to the series, but more about sharing that my attention and efforts are now primarily directed towards the cinematic project.
I appreciate your warm welcome, as bringing this show into your homes has been a unique and indescribable adventure.
Although some fans may be feeling a bit downhearted, it’s reassuring to understand that the end of Bluey isn’t actually imminent – contrary to what some might assume. While Joe Brumm played an integral role in creating the much-loved Heeler family, he was certainly not the only person involved in the process.
At Ludo Studio, the creative crew behind “Bluey” – including a mix of artists, animators, and narrative specialists – has consistently delivered engaging and improved episodes over the years. Instead of disappearing, Brumm is essentially handing over his responsibilities to others.
Bluey is cherished by countless individuals, and it brings comfort to know that the Heeler family and the series continue to be part of our lives, despite Brumm stepping more into the background. However, it’s natural to feel apprehensive about what the future may hold for the show.
As a gamer, I feel like it’s high time for me to go back and re-experience the wisdom from “The Sign.” Change is an inherent part of our lives, just as it was in the game. To quote Calypso, a character I admire: “Things will fall into place as they’re meant to.
All Bluey episodes can be watched and enjoyed on Disney+.
