The Handmaid's Tale producer warns fans 'a lot of people won’t make it to the end' in the final season

As a dedicated fan of The Handmaid’s Tale who has survived countless heart-wrenching episodes and cliffhangers, I must say that the news about the final season leaving us “powerfully rewarded” but also with a lot of casualties has me on the edge of my seat. I’ve seen enough to know that this dystopian world doesn’t play fair, but I’m hoping against hope that Aunt Lydia will finally meet her well-deserved demise.

Get ready, fans of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” as we approach the final season. I can’t help but feel that we should brace ourselves for many unexpected events, shocking revelations, and perhaps some tragic goodbyes. This dark series isn’t for the sensitive, it’s true. But a recent statement by one of the show’s producers has me feeling a bit uneasy.

During an interview with Deadline, Warren Littlefield provided updates on The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 on Hulu. According to him, the last group of episodes is currently being prepared, and notably, lead actress Elisabeth Moss will be directing these episodes. He advises fans to brace themselves for what lies ahead in this upcoming season.

Many viewers may find it hard to finish ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’. It’s both unsettling and thrilling. The showrunners and executive producers have put a tremendous amount of thought into catering to the audience’s expectations, and I believe those who have stayed with us for six seasons will feel profoundly gratified in the end.

Although we must brace ourselves for more tragic endings, some way, the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale will manage to please longtime fans like us. It remains a mystery as to how this can be achieved when so many characters may not survive until the end. He might be referring to the villainous figures in the series. Aunt Lydia, who has become increasingly complex over the past few seasons, is one such character whose departure I wouldn’t entirely mourn, if I’m being truthful.

When it comes to deciding who June should ship with, I’m truly conflicted. Normally, I have a preference. However, both Luke and Nick are exceptional individuals. It often happens in shows that one person from a love triangle gets written off, making the path clearer for the other. If I were to slightly lean towards one, it would be Nick, as they share an extraordinary bond. But Luke is incredibly endearing and made a selfless choice by getting arrested to ensure June and Nicole’s safety at the close of season 5. I hope he doesn’t meet such a fate, but the possibility exists.

If either June or Nick meet a tragic end following the events we’ve witnessed, I can only imagine how furious I would feel. The tension in this series is palpable, with every character seemingly on the brink. There are still numerous unanswered questions – will Gilead crumble? Will June and Luke be reunited with their daughter Hannah? Can these characters ever find true peace, given their troubled pasts even in Canada? The sixth season has a lot to delve into!

In addition, Littlefield was inquired about Margaret Atwood’s sequel novel “The Testaments” and its upcoming series. While he didn’t officially confirm a pickup to Deadline, he did express that the continuation is considered a top priority project. I adore this show, but I’m not sure my emotions can handle any more! We’ll need to wait for the conclusion of the final season to see how it might lead into “The Testaments”.
