A popular fantasy romance book series that's in development might be what ACOTAR fans need

As a long-time fan of captivating fantasy romance novels, this recent news has me absolutely thrilled! Ever since I stumbled upon Jennifer L. Armentrout’s enchanting writing style, I’ve been eagerly awaiting for her masterpiece, Blood and Ash, to be transformed into a television series. Sony stepping up to develop the show is truly music to my ears, given their successful track record with Outlander.

Exciting news for fellow lovers of fantasy romance novels! The beloved “Blood and Ash” series penned by author Jennifer L. Armentrout is set to be adapted for television. According to recent reports from Deadline, the project is now in development at Sony.

It appears that the studio holds great anticipation for the success of this show, as they are keen on expanding beyond the first book in the series to develop a total of five novels. As of now, there’s no network or streaming platform confirmed for its release. Nevertheless, it is significant news that this project has moved forward officially. Here is the list of books available in the series so far:

  • From Blood and Ash
  • A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire
  • The Crown of Gilded Bones
  • The War of Two Queens
  • A Soul of Ash and Blood

If the show thrives, there’s ample opportunity for it to carry on and broaden this universe, as the author is currently working on and aims to publish the sixth book next year. Moreover, a prequel series of novels is also available for potential exploration, according to the news source. Clearly, they won’t find themselves short of ideas in the near future!

Sony, the studio responsible for creating the popular “Outlander” series by Diana Gabaldon, is the one who helped breathe life into it. This show airs on Starz and can be streamed. I’m optimistic about “Blood and Ash”, hoping its journey mirrors “Outlander” rather than “Shadow and Bone”. I find this new series fascinating and believe it possesses all the ingredients to captivate us!

The story, titled “From Blood and Ash“, revolves around Poppy, a woman who was chosen by the gods at birth to be the Maiden. Despite living a secluded life up until her Ascension, Poppy yearns for battle alongside the guards against the evil that claimed her family. The narrative follows this female protagonist on her quest to save her entire kingdom. For more details about this captivating tale, read the detailed summary below:

The fate of the entire kingdom hinges on Poppy, a role she’s unsure if she truly desires. For a Maiden possesses not just a heart, but also a soul, longings, and when Hawke, a guard with golden eyes bound to facilitate her Ascension, appears, duty, destiny, desire, and necessity intertwine. He stirs anger within her, causes her to doubt everything she holds dear, and entices her with the allure of the forbidden.

In a realm long abandoned by the divine and shrouded in terror, a once-fallen kingdom stirs anew, driven by a relentless desire for retribution and repossession. As the specter of their accursed past looms ever nearer, the boundary between transgression and justice seems to fade. Poppy teeters on the brink of losing her love, her worthiness in the eyes of the gods, and ultimately, her life, as every sanguine thread that binds her world starts to fray.

Upon learning this news, my thoughts instantly drifted towards the captivating world of “A Court of Thorns and Roses” by Sarah J. Maas. This story follows a enemies-to-lovers dynamic, and shares some striking similarities with “Blood and Ash”. Given my excitement for Sarah J. Maas’ work being brought to life on Hulu, I find myself also contemplating the potential of this enchanting romance fantasy series coming to fruition.

The journey of ACOTAR to the small screen has been challenging, and regrettably, it seems that the show might not premiere any time soon – a situation that would be disheartening, and I fervently hope for a change in this. The television adaptation was initially announced in March 2021, with Ronald D. Moore, creator of Outlander, set as the showrunner.

The pace of progress seems to have stalled because of actor and writer strikes. Afterward, there haven’t been many new developments regarding the show, with Hulu confirming that it remains in a developmental stage but not currently being actively worked on. In essence, they’re keeping the concept alive without completely abandoning it, but production-wise, the series isn’t underway, such as casting or planning. In July 2024, Moore announced his departure from the 20th Century Television project (owned by Disney and Hulu) to join Sony instead.

It’s quite intriguing that when you visit the official site for “From Blood and Ash“, it states, “From Blood and Ash is a captivating, seductive, and unforeseen fantasy ideal for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Laura Thalassa.” Indeed, it seems as though both the author and you recognize the resemblance between these works!

It might be best for “A Court of Thorns and Roses” if Sony were to acquire it, allowing Sarah J. Maas to return to the project since Hulu seems uninterested or unwilling to prioritize it. We’ve been waiting for quite some time now, and I, along with many others, would love a television series adaptation of “ACOTAR.” A combination with “Blood and Ash” could make it even more exciting! However, if we don’t get a series, at least Maas’s books will still be available to read, which I’m eagerly anticipating!
