Strictly Come Dancing makes HUGE decision over glitzy costumes as they take progressive decision to make them cruelty-free and ditch real feathers following PETA plea
As a lifelong animal lover who has always been deeply moved by the suffering of innocent creatures, I wholeheartedly applaud Strictly Come Dancing for making the compassionate decision to ban real bird feathers from their glamorous costumes.
Strictly Come Dancing has chosen to take a significant step, opting for progressive changes in their costume design by banning the usage of genuine feathers and instead going with cruelty-free alternatives.
The strong move taken by BBC leaders follows the animal rights organization, PETA, urging them to discontinue the use of real feathers. They claimed that this practice inflicts pain on animals and is more “gruesome than glamorous.
According to reports confirmed by The Sun, there has been a gradual shift towards abandoning real feathers in the show’s productions during recent seasons.
In upcoming productions, there’s a strong expectation that both the BBC and they will shift towards employing synthetic feathers as an alternative.
According to reports, the Executive Producer of the show, Sarah James, mentioned to PETA that it’s unlikely the feathers used in this season’s costumes, which are usually reused across various shows, will be utilized again in future productions.
Reportedly, PETA requested that the BBC give the leftover feathers to contribute to their feather donation drive, also known as the “feather amnesty campaign.
They intend to use them for educational displays, protests, and fashion college projects.
As a devoted supporter, I can personally attest that each ornate accessory crafted from feathers was once adorned by a living bird, subjected to terror, brutally killed, and cruelly plucked of its plumage. This insight comes directly from PETA’s Vice President, Yvonne Taylor.
PETA commends Strictly Come Dancing for taking a compassionate step by banning feathers sourced cruelly in their production.
‘We’re excited to see the exclusively faux feather costumes it unveils in 2025.’
The move comes after the report that Shirley Ballas was forced to make a last minute outfit change in November after animal rights charity PETA slammed the BBC show for its use of feathers.
On Sunday for the results show, I couldn’t help but marvel at the stunning sight of the 64-year-old head judge gracefully donning a dazzling one-shouldered crimson sequin gown that shimmered like a starry night sky.
At the ICONS live event, Shirley initially appeared on stage in a stunning replica of Cher’s outfit. Later, she switched to a red dress for the taping of the pre-recorded results.
It turns out that the red dress was intended to be accessorized with ostrich feathers, but they had to be quickly removed during breaks in filming.
TopMob has contacted BBC representatives for a comment.
Recently, PETA voiced concerns to the BBC regarding the incorporation of bird feathers in the show’s outfits, a practice that can cause distress and even death to birds on some occasions.
According to a source, Shirley was taken aback by how unexpected it all happened, and she was particularly disappointed because the costly and stylish garment fell apart.
‘There wasn’t time to change into another outfit and the whole show is run to a tight schedule.
The wardrobe team was tasked with swiftly confirming that no feathers remained, as it was reported that even Judge Motsi Mabuse was lending a hand to make sure they were gone completely.
Last week, the fashion show faced criticism from an animal welfare organization, PETA, over the inhumane use of real feathers in this year’s extravagant outfits. They argued that these bird feathers are frequently obtained cruelly.
The organization advocating for animal rights argues that the utilization of bird feathers, which is more grisly than glamorous, should be avoided in dance settings.
PETA pleaded with show bosses to use alternative products in a letter.
Designers like Stella McCartney have decided not to use feathers in their work, instead opting for a feather-less approach, which they’ve publicly committed to.
In a letter, PETA’s Vice President of Corporate Projects, Yvonne Taylor, suggested that Strictly Come Dancing should also implement the same animal welfare policies as other shows do.
According to a document acquired by The Sun, there is an issue that needs attention regarding Strictly Come Dancing. While we enjoy the stunning dance routines it presents on our television screens, there is a significant matter of concern: the show’s incorporation of feathers.
She added: ‘The feathers on real birds are the result of immense animal suffering, and they hold no suitable spot in your dance venue.’
‘They are gory, not glamorous.’
In the letter, Yvonne added that the industry was ‘shrouded by mystery’ and ‘black market activity’.
She pointed out that the practice of live plucking, often seen, inflicts severe pain on birds and can even result in deadly wounds for them.
