A Man on the Inside season 2 renewed at Netflix (but it should have been Girls5eva)
As a long-time fan of comedy and someone who has seen their fair share of both hits and misses, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions about the recent Netflix announcements. On one hand, I’m thrilled that “A Man on the Inside” is getting a second season! Ted Danson is a comedic genius, and I’ve been hooked since the first episode. The show’s unique blend of humor, heart, and insight into aging is something truly special, and I can’t wait to see where Charles Nieuwendyk’s adventures take him next.
As a devoted comedy enthusiast, I’ve got a mix of joy and sadness to share from the Netflix realm. On one hand, there’s some electrifying news that’s bound to tickle your funny bone! However, on the flip side, it seems like we’re approaching the end of the year, and as usual, some tough choices are being made about the future of our beloved (and, in certain instances, under-appreciated) comedic series.
Great news to share: Michael Schur’s spy comedy featuring Ted Danson has been given a green light for another season! Titled “A Man on the Inside,” the announcement came out on December 16, barely a month since its premiere on November 21. The series has garnered rave reviews from critics and boasts impressive viewership numbers, even reaching the top of Netflix’s most-watched English TV shows list upon its debut.
Beyond its achievement, Danson received a Golden Globe nomination for portraying Charles Nieuwendyk, a former professional and widowed senior who replies to an ad seeking a “confidential informant” for a private detective. He secretly investigates a nursing home to apprehend a thief, but in the process, he, his new acquaintances, and even his daughter discover much more about aging than they initially anticipated.
As per the announcement from Netflix, the second season is slated for release in the year 2025. This could possibly be during the fall season, or even earlier if they manage to speed things up. Although I’m thrilled about Charles reuniting with Julie (played by Lilah Richcreek Estrada) on the mystery hinted at in the final episode of season 1, it’s hard not to feel a sense of disappointment given that Netflix has also reportedly ended production on its least recognized comedic series.
Girls5eva season 4 unofficially canceled at Netflix
After debuting on Netflix with seasons 1 and 2 available on Peacock, followed by an exclusive season 3, Girls5eva hasn’t had any new developments announced about its continuation. It seems that the show didn’t meet Netflix’s expectations in terms of popularity, as it failed to make the daily top 10 list in the United States, suggesting that even a platform like Netflix can’t ensure success for every show it acquires.
In the December 4th episode of her podcast “Busy Philipps Is Trying Her Best”, actress Busy Philipps discussed the future of the show with guest Danny Pellegrino, and for the first time, provided explicit information to fans. As per Philipps, the series is essentially finished, and she disclosed that Netflix’s agreement only covered season 3.
Netflix, by securing the series through season 3 without any further commitments, doesn’t find the cast and crew hanging in limbo for a potential renewal. However, Philipps maintains hope that the show might continue in some shape or form down the line, suggesting it may not be completely “dead” yet, given no official cancellation has been announced.
Here’s what Busy Philipps said about the series on her podcast:
I’m openly acknowledging that the show is essentially over, given Netflix’s decision to move it to Peacock. Frankly, I find myself questioning why it didn’t resonate more with viewers or perhaps it wasn’t watched in a manner that truly matters. To be honest, I’m not entirely sure.
In other words, unlike typical TV shows where there’s a time limit specified in the contract, we didn’t have such a deal set up for our show. We’d all love to do more, whether it’s a movie like “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” or another season, but I don’t think it’s likely to happen.
In a playful manner, Philipps proposed an idea that she and the cast could stage a real-life performance similar to their characters’ shows from season 3 at Radio City Music Hall, or perhaps even create a Broadway musical. Additionally, it was suggested that the series might follow in the footsteps of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” which often takes long breaks between seasons, and I personally look forward to the fourth and final season Philipps mentioned.
It’s been unfairly questioned that the series title and viewpoint has been a turn off for potential viewers, and that could very well be true, but it’s interesting to put A Man on the Inside and Girls5eva side by side. One features “man” in the title, the other features “girls.” One stars a man in his late 70s, the other stars four women between the ages of 45 and 61. It’s just something to chew on.
I’m looking forward to catching season 2 of “A Man on the Inside” on Netflix in 2025, but I can’t shake off this disappointing feeling that Netflix could have done more to boost the success of “Girls5eva,” a show that truly deserves it. It feels odd to enjoy such a creative, witty, and purposeful series, yet see it struggle to connect with mainstream culture.
Watch all three seasons of Girls5eva on Netflix.
