Miriam Margolyes returns to Doctor Who in new role

As a longtime Whovian with memories of Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor etched deeply into my mind, the news that Miriam Margolyes is joining the cast of “Classic Doctors New Monsters: Faithful Friends” has me positively giddy! The fact that she’ll be voicing a Lupari soothsayer in ‘The Dying Breed’, a tale that brings back the canine humanoids from season 13, is just the icing on the TARDIS-shaped cake.

Miriam Margolyes returns to the world of Doctor Who as a new character.

Last year, during the Christmas special titled ‘The Star Beast’, the actress who plays a role in Call the Midwife made her debut on the cherished BBC science fiction program as the voice of the alien character named Beep the Meep.

Currently, Margolyes is part of the ensemble for the audio collection titled “Classic Doctors, New Monsters: Loyal Companions“. This set includes four fresh narratives in the form of audio adventures that star classic Doctors and creatures from the latest installments of the series.

In the show ‘The Dying Breed’, the star will portray a soothsayer from the Lupari race, an episode where the Fourth Doctor encounters this dog-like alien species that was initially presented in ‘The Halloween Apocalypse’, the thirteenth season’s finale.

This production, titled ‘The Dying Breed’, features Tom Baker playing the role of The Doctor, Louise Jameson as Leela, and John Leeson providing voice for K9.

In the collection are three episodes: “The Deception of the Krillitanes,” “The Krillitane Artifact,” and “Leaving Your Lover in Five Hundred Ways,” which showcase encounters between the Second, Seventh Doctors, and the Krillitanes, as well as a unique romantic comedy titled “Five Hundred Ways to Leave Your Lover” that features an unexpected encounter between the Eighth Doctor and the Monks.

As a game scribe, I, Tim Foley – who’s previously crafted tales like ‘Five Hundred Ways to Leave Your Lover’ – took a moment to ponder my experiences penning stories for the unique duo, the Lupari and the Monks.

In the collection, my two tales stand as polar opposites. Writing for the Lupari was an exhilarating experience, Foley shared in a statement.

We have an opportunity to explore their ancestral land and interact with them during an earlier phase of their existence. It’s a captivating medieval tale, featuring an entertaining part for K9 and fresh lore that has been endorsed by the creator of [Flux

“The Monks are such a mysterious race, so of course the best way to explore them further is in a screwball comedy,” he continued. “This is a gay romcom with the Eighth Doctor, and I can’t wait to hear what people make of it. You’re all invited to the wedding.”

In the UK, you can catch Doctor Who on BBC One, while viewers outside of the UK can find it on Disney+. For those in the UK, classic episodes of Doctor Who can be found on BBC iPlayer.
