Grantchester’s new character teased ahead of season 9 release
As a seasoned gamer with years of immersion in diverse digital worlds, I must say that diving into the realms of Grantchester Season 9 feels like a refreshing change from my usual quests and battles. The intriguing character dynamics between Alphy Kotteram (Rishi Nair) and Geordie Keating (Robson Green) have me hooked already!
Actor Rishi Nair, known for his role in “Hollyoaks,” discusses his new addition to “Grantchester” season 9, highlighting the distinct traits of his character Alphy Kotteram compared to past clergy-turned-investigators.
Prior to his initial appearance, following the exit of Tom Brittney from the role of Will Davenport, Nair spoke to Radio Times about how Alphy’s initial encounter with Robson Green’s character, Geordie Keating, doesn’t exactly go smoothly.
Alphy holds a negative view towards the police. His perspective on the institution is shaped by his experiences. Being a person of color growing up in Britain during the 1940s and 1950s, his encounters with the police would likely have been vastly different from those of the two previous vicars. This was stated by Nair.
“He tends to view people in a specific light, and he strongly condemns misuse of power or those who abuse their authority. In such situations, he consistently takes a moral stance.
Clearly, it’s apparent that Geordie initially encounters Alphy under the assumption that he’s there to burglarize the vicarage. He believes Alphy is a thief.
From the start, Alphy’s association with the police environment where Geordie was raised has always strained their connection, making it turbulent from the very beginning.
Moreover, it appears that Alphy has no intention of involving himself with Geordie. Yet, Geordie approaches him seeking assistance on a case, to which Alphy, being a vicar, responds, “I don’t see why I should help you with the case. Certainly not.
Of course, that animosity doesn’t last, as they will develop their relationship over the course of the season.
As the story unfolds, Alphy comes to recognize Geordie as a man, discovering more similarities between them than initially perceived. And watching these characters grow within their connection is quite moving.
Green pointed out: “Since it’s set in Grantchester, we need to build a partnership between these characters who will be solving crimes.
In another rendition, consider a situation where an invincible entity clashes with something unyielding. However, they must find shared territory for unity to occur.
He explained that the case Geordie goes to Alphy over involves a religious matter, and while Alphy refuses to help at first, his curiosity soon leads him to get involved.
Meanwhile, the show itself has already been renewed for a 10th season.
Grantchester season 9 begins on Wednesday, January 8 at 9pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
