Robbie Williams compares new biopic Better Man to “therapy”
As a longtime fan of Robbie Williams, I must say that his journey, as portrayed in “Better Man,” resonates deeply with me. While it’s a fantastical retelling of his life story, the emotional authenticity shines through, much like the raw honesty in his music.
In a more imaginative approach, the film biography about Robbie Williams could deviate from reality, but its emotional heart remained as authentic as possible.
The upcoming film directed by Michael Gracey, who brought us “The Greatest Showman,” tells the story of Robbie Williams, focusing on his rise, fall, and comeback. However, unlike the real Williams, the character is portrayed by a chimpanzee, with Jonno Davies bringing the chimp to life using motion-capture technology.
In a conversation with Digital Spy, Williams drew parallels between the biopic “Better Man” and his 2023 Netflix documentary series titled after himself. He hopes that viewers will find similar lessons and insights from both works.
He playfully mentioned that his actions were motivated by selfless intentions, but in truth, he’s known for craving attention. This significant chance could be exactly what he needs to propel the final phase of his professional journey.
It wasn’t until after the documentary was released that I discovered there were additional reasons for its existence, much as one might discover hidden layers in a film.
The next day, upon finding 25 emails expressing gratitude for the documentary that shared my story and revealing similarities within themselves, I was taken aback, realizing unintentionally, I had performed a truly compassionate act.
After the screenings, folks often approach me with tears streaming down their faces, expressing admiration for my courage, a sentiment I find puzzling. However, I appreciate your kind words. I understand that beyond any commercial aspects, this experience serves as a form of healing for many.
Apart from what I’ve directly experienced, I can confirm that it holds healing properties as well, which is indeed remarkable.
As casually as Robbie Williams himself, I playfully quipped, “Guess what? I’ll be on tour next year, so grab your tickets!
As a devoted admirer myself, I can’t help but share that Jonno Davies, who brings Williams to life in Better Man, hints at an unexpected twist for viewers. It won’t just be because this series presents our beloved star in the form of a chimpanzee that leaves us amazed, but there are many more surprises in store!
He mentioned that many people believe they understand Robbie Williams and his history, based on the stories widely publicized for the past three decades. However, they’re about to discover an entirely new aspect of him.
I believe his honesty and vulnerability in the story might not be what they anticipate, and I think it will come as a pleasant surprise to readers because it exposes him so openly.
Raechelle Banno, portraying Nicole Appleton in the movie, remarked: “Jonno has truly encapsulated the spirit of Robbie. As a spectator, I was profoundly moved, much like a fan would be, as this is what a film about Robbie should evoke.
Better Man is released in UK cinemas on December 26.
