Kylie Minogue is left ‘baffled’ as a long-lost unreleased song with Prince Baby Doll is unearthed
As I delve into the captivating tale of Kylie Minogue, it is evident that her life was a whirlwind of experiences, most of which unfolded before the era of smartphones and social media. The sheer thrill of living in the moment, without the constant fear of every move being documented, adds a certain allure to her journey. It’s like she was a secret agent operating under the radar, dancing through the clubs unbeknownst to the prying eyes of the internet.
Kylie Minogue is puzzled because an old, previously unheard song she made with Prince has been discovered.
1992 marked the release of a joint effort titled “Baby Doll,” where Kylie Minogue’s lyrics were sung by Prince. This song has since been deemed inaccessible or lost.
However, the song was discovered even though it was initially stored on a cassette tape within his estate, as reported by The Sun.
The well-known Pop Princess, aged 56, allegedly feels perplexed due to the leak, yet delighted that music enthusiasts now have an opportunity to listen to the enigmatic tune they’ve been eagerly waiting for.
A source shared with the media outlet that Kylie, like many others, is equally puzzled about the origin of the track.
The tape had been given to her during the Nineties, but following Prince’s passing in 2016, it became property of his estate.
‘Any leak is annoying but it’s nice for fans to finally know what the mystery song sounds like, God knows they have waited long enough.’
In that recording from nearly 3 decades back, Prince’s voice is captured singing these words: ‘Allow me to serve as your sweet baby doll, a blend of sweetness, warmth, and all good qualities.’
‘Let me be your paradise. Let me be your baby doll.’
The new song shares a similarity with Kylie Minogue’s 2001 hit “Come Into My World,” due to its distinctively familiar vocals.
In 2016, when Prince died, Kylie expressed a touching tribute to him and unveiled a hidden recording to her fans for the first time on Instagram.
Since my adolescent days, Prince has been the musician who captivated me deeply. After witnessing his performance at London’s Earls Court in 1992, I had the privilege of meeting him, as illustrated by a photograph featuring the classic Purple Rain album cover.
She shared that she was eager to collaborate with him, to which he responded by inviting her to his studio. Inquiring about her lyrics and preferred microphone setup, he playfully engaged with her during the conversation.
‘I did end up giving him lyrics for a song called Baby Doll. His driver delivered a cassette to me later that night.
Kylie mentioned that they demonstrated a performance of Prince singing and performing his original composition, ‘Baby Doll.’ Unfortunately, they didn’t capture it on tape adequately.
After that, I got the wonderful opportunity to tour Paisley Park. It was an unforgettable experience – like a dream come true! Many thanks for the music and moments you’ve given us. Rest in peace, Prince. #ripprince #whendovescry
Enthusiasts swiftly bombarded Kylie’s post with appeals for the mysterious track’s release, as one supporter put it: “@KylieMinogue, my two favorite artists on one song. You need to make this happen! Release it in his memory, he would be proud.
‘Can we hear Baby Doll on your next album?’ asked another.
Previously, Kylie expressed her admiration for Prince. In an interview with The Mirror back in 2014, she stated, “I’d be thrilled to perform with Prince since he was my teenage crush, truly.
In retrospect, I confess that my frequent trips to watch “Purple Rain” may have led me to cover the costs of his vehicle on one occasion or two.
Prince died at his Paisley Park estate near Minneapolis after he was found collapsed in a lift.
Four years after, it was disclosed that Kylie had almost collaborated on a song with Prince, a figure often considered one of the most exceptional musicians of his time. This prospect, she felt, was tantalizingly close to realizing a cherished dream!
She shared that, after their encounter backstage post a concert, he asked her to pen down some lyrics. Later, he transformed these lyrics into the song titled “Baby Doll.
Discussing the creation of her latest album, the renowned musician reminisced about her previous successes and the journey that brought her to produce this cheerful track. She nearly collaborated on a song with the artist once famously known as Prince during the process.
She shared that she practically lived out a near-perfect dream when she encountered Prince. At the tender age of 14, an ardent fan of music, Prince was simply… electrifying for her.
Later on, I attended his concert during the early ’90s at Earl’s Court (Rest in peace, Earl’s Court). Afterward, I had the privilege of meeting him personally.
In a surprising turn of events, I found the boldness within me to announce, ‘I’m working on an album.’ At that moment, I was unsure about the words I spoke or their meaning. This was before smartphones and other modern technology became commonplace.
In truth, I may come across as less bold than I truly am at times, even to my own self. However, there was this occasion when I found myself in an unexpected situation with someone. To be honest, I’m not entirely sure what “just hanging out” entails, but we did spend time together. In the process, he managed to catch me off guard a bit.
‘He was like, ‘So where are you lyrics?’ I’m like, ‘I don’t…’ ‘Where do you want your mic set up?’ It was too weird and I must’ve seen him a couple… I wish I had, without phones, the memories, there’s just bits.’
Later on, Kylie explained that following her contribution of lyrics for Prince, he presented a cassette with the title “Baby Doll”, which he had crafted utilizing her own words. Unfortunately, her recording company showed reluctance toward the notion of Prince potentially taking charge of the project entirely.
She added: “I’m not sure how many days had passed or anything like that. I simply penned down some lyrics. At that time, I wasn’t composing songs yet. To be honest, I did want to, but I didn’t really, and I handed him these lyrics, saying, ‘This is just a reminder of the good old days.’
It appears that he mentioned his driver would bring a cassette over, as we conversed on the phone. I assume the driver has arrived since then, creating an isolated moment at home when the elevator bell rang (Bing bong sound).
I find myself alone in appreciating this cassette containing Prince’s rendition of ‘Baby Doll’. Interestingly, Prince, known for his sleepless nights and constant creativity, seems to have played a role in its production that I was somehow part of.
‘That was my almost, we didn’t record it. Well, actually I do know. I suggested it to my label and I think he would want it to do it all and they weren’t into that. That was that.
As a die-hard fan, I must admit, there was a spark of audacity within me, yet I can’t quite put it into words. I didn’t have the conviction to stand firm and refuse, to boldly declare, “No.
She also confessed her feelings of gratitude that a significant part of her life predated the widespread use of mobile phones, making it less likely for everything to be constantly recorded.
The Spongstress who twirls acknowledged: ‘I’m genuinely pleased that most of my life journey occurred prior to widespread smartphone use and constant video recording.’
“I must visit those clubs, and if you missed it, well, you missed it. Being there and living the moment was everything, and I adore every bit of it.
As a child of the 90s, I can’t help but feel a deep nostalgia for the simpler times, the times before smartphones and social media took over our lives. I remember the thrill of waiting for my favorite shows to come on TV, the excitement of getting a new cassette or CD, and the joy of playing outside with friends until the streetlights came on.
‘I got to do all of that without feeling like it’s going to be live streamed somewhere.’
