8 best Apple TV+ shows of 2024

As a dedicated binge-watcher with a soft spot for exceptional storytelling and a knack for seeking out the hidden gems among the streaming giants, I must say that Apple TV+ has truly outdone itself this year! From the gripping historical drama “Masters of the Air” to the mind-bending sci-fi thriller “Dark Matter”, there’s something for everyone on this platform.

2024 may not seem like a standout year for Apple TV+ based on ratings and word-of-mouth, but it has actually been quite remarkable. Despite the absence of a new season of Ted Lasso, the platform has released numerous high-quality shows this year.

Without a shadow of a doubt, it’s clear that the quality of programming on this streaming service ranks among the finest and highest-quality TV series available. The exceptional TV shows I’ve chosen to exclude from my list of the year’s top Apple TV+ series are superior to many of the most critically acclaimed shows from more widely recognized streaming platforms.

If you missed any of these good Apple TV+ shows in 2024, it’s time to watch them before the end of the year and Apple rolls out a whole new slate of shows in 2025.

Kick off our list with one of the top-rated Apple TV+ series from this year, “Presumed Innocent,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal. (Paraphrased)

Presumed Innocent

8 best Apple TV+ shows of 2024

Premiere date: June 12, 2024

David E. Kelley’s “Presumed Innocent,” featuring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ruth Negga, is undoubtedly one of this year’s top thrillers. This series is inspired by Scott Turow’s book with the same title, which was previously adapted for a 1990 film titled “Presumed Innocent” starring Harrison Ford.

In “Presumed Innocent,” prosecutor Rusty Sabich, portrayed by Gyllenhaal, finds himself under suspicion for the murder of his colleague Carolyn Polhemus (Renate Reinsve), following revelations about their past affair. As the truth about their relationship emerges, Rusty fights tirelessly to clear his name in the face of opposition from his former workplace.

The hit series “Presumed Innocent” proved to be highly popular, prompting Apple TV+ to swiftly greenlight a second season. This upcoming season will introduce an entirely fresh cast and a brand-new mystery.

Shrinking

8 best Apple TV+ shows of 2024

Season 2 premiere date: Oct. 16, 2024

Regarding Harrison Ford, “Shrinking” is one of the top Apple TV+ shows this year that you shouldn’t miss out on. Created by Jason Segel, Brett Goldstein, and Bill Lawrence, the comedy series will return for its second season in 2024, standing tall as the most impressive comedy show on Apple TV+ after “Ted Lasso.

In the film titled “Shrinking“, Jason Segel portrays the character of Jimmy, a therapist who has recently experienced the loss of his spouse. Overwhelmed by grief, Jimmy starts doubting the advice he’s been dispensing for years and begins to act unconventionally instead. As a consequence, both Jimmy and those around him undergo significant transformations.

One of the most triumphant Apple TV+ series, “Shrinking,” continues to captivate audiences during its ongoing Season 2. The current season will conclude on Christmas Day with the Season 2 finale. Excitingly, plans for a third season, “Shrinking” Season 3, are already underway on Apple TV+.

Stay tuned for more news about the hit series!

Silo

Season 2 premiere date: Nov. 15, 2024

Right now, “Silo” stands out as the top series on Apple TV+! We’re right in the midst of its second season, which kicked off in mid-November. It seems likely that this show will remain the most popular on Apple TV+ at least until February. The Season 2 finale is set to air on January 17, 2025.

The show “Silo” is inspired by Hugh Howey’s book trilogy that narrates the lives of people living in a massive underground silo in a post-apocalyptic setting. The series boasts an outstanding ensemble cast, featuring talents like Rebecca Ferguson, Rashida Jones, Common, Tim Robbins, Steven Zahn, Avi Nash, Alexandra Riley, David Oyelowo, and others.

There’s little question that the series by Graham Yost, “Silo,” will likely be renewed for a third season. However, whether it continues beyond this could hinge on Apple TV+’s plans for the show. Rest assured, given its current viewership, it won’t be axed anytime soon.

Slow Horses

8 best Apple TV+ shows of 2024

Season 4 premiere date: Sept. 4, 2024

The ‘Slow Horses’ series is outstanding when it comes to thrillers, and there are several seasons available on Apple TV+. If you enjoy spy dramas or political intrigue, then this show is definitely worth checking out. The fourth season of ‘Slow Horses’ recently premiered this fall on the streaming platform.

The series is based on Mick Herron’s Slough House book series. Each season is basically one of Herron’s books, of which there are nine! So if you like the series, you should give the books a read, too.

In a different phrasing: Gary Oldman portrays Jackson Lamb, head of Slough House, an agency within MI6 and MI5 that houses misfit agents who’ve made mistakes and can no longer serve in regular government roles. However, these “Slow Horses,” as they are called, often find themselves right in the heart of trouble as they help solve significant crimes.

The fifth and sixth seasons of “Slow Horses” have already been confirmed on Apple TV+, and it wouldn’t shock me if additional seasons were also in the works!

Bad Sisters

8 best Apple TV+ shows of 2024

Season 2 premiere date: Nov. 13, 2024

Among all the comedies available on Apple TV+, “Bad Sisters” stands out as my top pick! If you’re a fan of dark comedy with a delightful Irish flavor, I can’t recommend enough that you give it a watch immediately.

Originating from the minds of Sharon Horgan, Brett Baer, and Dave Finkle, Bad Sisters follows a fascinating tale about five sisters known as the Garveys, who unite to conceal the demise of one of their brothers-in-law. This gripping series boasts an impressive ensemble headed by Horgan herself, along with Liv Hewson, Anne-Marie Duff, Eva Birthistle, Sarah Greene, and Brian Greene.

Sisters of Misfortune doesn’t merely provide laughter; it also tugs at the heartstrings surprisingly well for its genre. However, once given a try, you’ll find yourself captivated by this talented ensemble.

The second season of the show “Bad Sisters” made its debut on Apple TV+ on November 13, and similar to “Shrinking,” its finale is scheduled for release on Christmas Day. Here’s hoping that this captivating series will be renewed for a third season!

Pachinko

Season 2 premiere date: Aug. 23, 2024

Without a doubt, I strongly recommend checking out “Pachinko” – it’s an outstanding television drama that you might be missing out on! In fact, it ranks among the very best currently airing.

According to Min Jin Lee’s novel titled “Pachinko“, the story unfolds around a family that traverses generations, starting from their journey out of Korea and settling in Japan. The show made its debut on Apple TV+ back in March 2022. After a wait of over two years, the long-anticipated second season premiered on Apple TV+ this summer. As we move forward into the second season, the show has been improving even more. The series boasts some exceptional acting performances on television.

If you’re not watching Pachinko, this is the show for you!

Dark Matter

Premiere date: May 8, 2024

If you didn’t catch the series “Dark Matter” earlier in the year, there’s still an opportunity for you to watch it before 2024 concludes. This show is among the top new programs that debuted this year, and I have a strong feeling that its popularity will grow significantly throughout its multi-season run on Apple TV+.

Blake Crouch penned down the series, derived from his original novel. The narrative revolves around Jason Dessen, portrayed by Joel Edgerton, a physicist who unintentionally generates an alternate reality mirroring his own life. Throughout the storyline, he endeavors to reassemble fragments of his former existence.

If you’re a fan of science fiction television with plenty of unexpected plots, then this current show is perfect for you! The stellar cast includes Jennifer Connelly, Alice Braga, Dayo Okeniyi, Oakes Fegley, Jimmi Simpson, and Edgerton.

The second season of “Dark Matter” is being developed! Keep an eye out for further details on the upcoming season as they become available.

Masters of the Air

Premiere date: Jan. 26, 2024

The final show on the roster is ‘Masters of the Air,’ a limited series that I just had to add. It was surprisingly the most-watched original Apple TV+ program when it first aired, even with the immense popularity of shows like ‘Ted Lasso’ and others.

The reason for its immediate popularity becomes clear. The series “Masters of the Air” features Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Barry Keoghan, and Anthony Boyle in lead roles, created by John Shiban and John Orloff. This production is inspired by the true events surrounding the 100th Bomber Group during World War II, as depicted in the book of the same name. Additionally, “Masters of the Air” serves as a continuation of both “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” It’s based on Donald L. Miller’s book with the same title.

The series follows those responsible for bombing the German army during World War II.

If you like war shows, Masters of the Air on Apple TV+ is a must-watch!

Other good Apple TV+ shows from 2024: Criminal Record, Bad Monkey, Sugar, Sunny, and Manhunt.

That’s the list of the best Apple TV+ shows of the year. I know I had to leave some great shows off the list. If you don’t like the eight shows picked, check out the other five shows I shared on the streaming service right now.

Stay tuned for more good Apple TV+ shows coming in 2025!
