The top 3 Hulu horror movies of 2024, ranked

As a seasoned gamer and horror movie enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt (and a few too many sleepless nights to count), I’ve seen it all – from the classics like “Nightmare on Elm Street” to modern masterpieces such as “Get Out”. So, when Hulu announced their new horror releases in 2024, I was eager to dive headfirst into these terrifying tales.

This year, Hulu offers a variety of horror movies available for streaming, such as “Late Night with the Devil”, “Immaculate”, “The First Omen”, “Sting”, “Cuckoo”, and “Alien: Romulus”. Despite this wide selection, Hulu has only unveiled three new original horror films in 2024.

In a more conversational style: I watched “Hold Your Breath”, “Mr. Crocket” and “Carved”. These spine-tingling films premiered on Hulu last October, and as a horror enthusiast, I couldn’t resist binge-watching them in one go. Though they might not rank among the best horrors I’ve seen, they were engaging enough to keep me hooked throughout. If you’re debating whether or not to give these movies a try, take a look at my ranking for a better idea of what to expect!

Beyond just offering details about every movie, I also expressed my personal views and feelings about them. Interestingly, the film that took the top spot was my favorite, while the one at position three didn’t resonate with me as much.

3. Carved

“Carved” revolves around a chilling-funny tale of a murderous jack-o’-lantern on a rampage. On Halloween night in 1993, workers at a historical reenactment village find themselves fighting for survival against a vengeful, terrifyingly large pumpkin monster. The ensemble cast includes Peyton Elizabeth Lee, Corey Fogelmanis, Sasha Mason, Wyatt Lindner, Jonah Lees, and more.

I find the movie “Carved” quite entertaining and light-hearted. It doesn’t aim for seriousness, which might be why some people didn’t appreciate it. The film is brimming with dark comedy, and it certainly lives up to its slasher genre with plenty of gory kill scenes. If you’re in the mood for a fast, amusing watch, “Carved” could be just what you need.

2. Mr. Crocket

The character Mr. Crocket is derived from the 2022 short film titled “Mr. Crocket” by Brandon Epsy. It narrates the story of a distraught mother who embarks on a perilous journey to save her child, who has been taken by a malevolent, demonic children’s TV presenter with a sinister past. Elvis Nolasco takes on the role of the children’s show host, Mr. Emmanuel Crocket, while Jerrika Hinton plays Summer Beverly, the frantic mother, and Ayden Gavin portrays Major Beverly, her son.

First off, the film’s distinctive plot idea really drew me in. As I continued watching, I was thoroughly impressed by its powerful imagery and acting performances. Elvis Nolasco delivers an exceptional portrayal of the intimidating Mr. Crocket. The practical effects were also top-notch. If you’re a fan of supernatural horror that offers both emotional resonance and visually striking scenes, Mr. Crocket is definitely worth checking out.

1. Hold Your Breath

In this chilling tale, I found myself drawn into the world of Sarah Paulson’s return to horror, set amidst the haunting dust storms of 1930s Oklahoma. As Margaret Bellum, a woman whose grasp on reality seems to slip away, I witnessed her struggle with terrifying hallucinations and intense feelings of paranoia that left me breathless with anticipation.

In the story, she grows certain that an ominous and perilous supernatural entity hides within the whirling dust clouds and menaces her loved ones. Amiah Miller, Annaleigh Ashford, Alona Jane Robbins, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are added to the cast alongside Paulson.

Time and time again, I find myself in awe of Sarah Paulson’s incredible acting skills, and this film is no exception. Unlike traditional scary movies, it doesn’t rely on jump scares, but rather keeps you hooked with its intriguing plotline that leaves you guessing what will happen next. It’s filled with surprising twists and turns that will challenge your perception of reality. If you’re a fan of thought-provoking horror films that bend your mind, be sure to add Hold Your Breath to your watchlist!
