James Gadson has passed away at the age of 86.
Barbara, the wife of the famous R&B drummer, told Rolling Stone that he passed away on April 2nd after a period of illness.
Barbara shared that he’d recently had surgery and had also fallen, resulting in a back injury.
She described him as a wonderful person, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, as well as an incredibly talented drummer.
Following news of his passing, tributes quickly flooded in from fans and famous friends.
Ray Parker Jr., best known for the song from Ghostbusters, shared a heartwarming photo of himself with James on Instagram as a tribute.
He penned: ‘RIP James Gadson 🙁 We played together over 50 years. He changed the world.’
Meanwhile, fellow musician Nick Perri also paid his respects, sharing a series of throwback snaps.
I’m absolutely heartbroken! I just found out that the incredible James Gadson is gone. It feels like he’s not left us, but moved on to some amazing new journey, and honestly, knowing him, that’s probably exactly what he’s doing. It’s just… devastating.

He collaborated with many iconic musicians, such as Paul McCartney, Diana Ross, Bill Withers, and Marvin Gaye.
James was also one of the most recorded drummers of all time, playing on thousands of tracks.
Some of his most iconic work includes Lean On Me and Use Me, as well as I Want You and Love Hangover.
He was also a key figure in creating the iconic disco sound of the 1970s, contributing to popular songs like “I Will Survive,” “Don’t Leave Me This Way,” and “Got To Be Real.”
As his career progressed, he worked with popular artists like Beck, Justin Timberlake, D’Angelo, and Harry Styles.
