Anna Kendrick’s underseen thriller is now on Netflix

As a gamer who has seen more movies than I’ve cleared levels, Anna Kendrick’s performance in “Alice, Darling” is a must-watch. It’s not often that we get to see such a nuanced portrayal of a character grappling with the complexities of an abusive relationship.

In a more straightforward manner: You can now stream the underrated thriller starring Anna Kendrick, titled “Alice, Darling,” on Netflix in both the United Kingdom and Ireland.

As Kendrick, I embark on a chilling journey in this psychological thriller, where I take a well-deserved break with my two closest companions, Sophie (portrayed by the Marvel’s Loki star Wunmi Mosaku) and Tess (Kaniehtiio Horn). However, as the vacation unfolds, I find myself acting mysteriously, as long-buried secrets about my abusive ex-boyfriend Simon (Charlie Carrick) come to light.

As I, a determined soul trying to mend my world, find myself amidst tranquility at our vacation retreat, a twist unfolds: Simon unexpectedly shows up, and a young lady from around here vanishes.

Earlier, Kendrick shared insights about her character’s role, revealing that her own past in an abusive relationship influenced her portrayal in the movie.

In her conversation with The Los Angeles Times, she expressed a strong connection to Alice’s fixated mindset. She confessed, “I find myself grasping onto an illogical desire that if I can just improve slightly, I will be secure. It feels like there are pliers clamped on my heart.

In a more open conversation, Kendrick, star of “Pitch Perfect,” shared insights on how the film’s portrayal of emotional abuse resonated with certain experiences from her personal life.

In my own words, I struggled to distinguish normal disagreements from abuse because, while Simon never physically harmed me, I wasn’t confident that he wouldn’t. Alice’s insights were invaluable as they stemmed from her personal experiences rather than relying on tangible evidence from Simon.

She emphasized that it was crucial for the film to primarily focus on Alice’s continuous presence. This doesn’t mean it has to involve violence for you to realize you can depart if needed, or to understand that you deserve respect and safety.

Alice, Darling is now available to watch on Netflix.
