NASCAR: Possible charter landing spot ruled out for 2025?
As a seasoned NASCAR enthusiast with decades of races under my belt, I find myself both intrigued and slightly baffled by the ongoing charter saga leading up to the 2025 season. The dance around these charters is reminiscent of a high-speed game of musical chairs, with teams strategically positioning themselves for the best possible seats.
As the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season approaches, there remain several unanswered questions concerning the ownership of the charters, which have yet to be addressed.
23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports decided against signing the latest NASCAR team ownership contract, causing NASCAR to declare their readiness to proceed with only 32 teams in 2025 as opposed to the typical 36.
However, as legal disputes persisted due to the antitrust lawsuit filed by these two teams against NASCAR, an additional issue arose: NASCAR apparently overlooked the fact that these two teams had both reached an agreement to purchase a charter from Stewart-Haas Racing during their expansion from two to three vehicles.
At the end of the 2024 season, Stewart-Haas Racing will cease operations. However, Gene Haas, one of the team’s co-owners, retained one of the four charters they possessed. Additionally, another charter was procured by Trackhouse Racing Team as part of their growth from a two-car team to a three-car team.
As a gamer, I’m keeping my eyes peeled on the NASCAR scene for 2025. The charters meant for 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports are yet to be officially assigned, leaving only 30 confirmed charter entries for the season. The question now is: where might those missing charters land if they do at all? After all, NASCAR can’t compel a team to field an extra car against their will.
Richard Childress Racing set with two full-time entries
Discussions were held during the summer regarding a possible return by Richard Childress Racing to having three permanent racing teams, which they last had in 2017.
On various instances over the past three seasons, they’ve added a third competitor, the No. 33 Chevrolet, to their roster. In 2022 and 2023, this car was only raced once in each year. However, during the 2024 season, it participated in six different races.
2022 saw Austin Hill taking charge behind the wheel, but a year later, in 2023, it was Brodie Kostecki who took over. In the following year, 2024, Hill managed four separate drives, while Will Brown and Ty Dillon each made one appearance.
On the other hand, it appears that they will persist with two full-time Chevrolets based on their announcement made this week. The cars in question are the No. 3 Chevrolet driven by Austin Dillon and the No. 8 Chevrolet piloted by Kyle Busch.
The team has made it official: They intend to field a third vehicle in several competitions throughout the season, with various drivers at the wheel. However, this will not be for every race in the 2025 schedule. Andy Street has been appointed as the team manager overseeing this effort.
For our third entry, since it’s part-time, a charter wouldn’t be beneficial for it. At present, it seems none of the other teams are seeking extra charters during this particular offseason either.
Note that beyond the four-team organizations, Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing (often referred as being “grandfathered”), no other teams can have over three chartered operations.
23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports continue their plan to field three cars permanently in 2025. Riley Herbst is slated to team up with Bubba Wallace and Tyler Reddick at 23XI, while it’s speculated that Zane Smith will race alongside Todd Gilliland and Noah Gragson at Front Row Motorsports.
The upcoming NASCAR Cup Series season starts on February 16, 2025, with the running of the 67th annual Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. Fox will be broadcasting the event live, commencing at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
