Where Skeleton Crew lands on the Star Wars timeline

As a seasoned Star Wars gamer with memories of the original trilogy etched deeply into my core, I must say that the recent addition to the galaxy far, far away, “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” has truly captured my imagination. The focus on space pirates and children as protagonists is a fresh take that breathes new life into this iconic universe.

In 2024, Star Wars presented three animated series: the final season of The Bad Batch, a new installment for the Star Wars Tales anthology, and additional episodes of Young Jedi Adventures. Furthermore, two entirely fresh stories were introduced to live-action. The Acolyte premiered this past summer, while Star Wars: Skeleton Crew recently debuted on Disney Plus.

Skeleton Crew stands out by being the sole live-action Star Wars series that centers around children as the main characters (except perhaps Grogu from The Mandalorian), and it also places a significant emphasis on the pirate society within the Star Wars Universe. Space pirates often serve as adversaries in Young Jedi Adventures and make appearances in certain episodes of The Mandalorian. However, the opening scene of Skeleton Crew, along with its later setting in the second episode, suggests a more prominent portrayal of these pirates.

In a somewhat unexpected move, an episode of “The Mandalorian” was titled “The Pirate.” Interestingly enough, “Skeleton Crew” isn’t just connected to Disney+’s initial launch platform by its pirate theme; they both unfold during the same period in Star Wars chronology. Alongside “The Book of Boba Fett” and “Ahsoka,” they form part of an expanding series set within the New Republic era. This phase comes after the demise of the Empire, several years following the end of the original trilogy (and well before the events depicted in the sequel trilogy).

It remains uncertain at this point whether Skeleton Crew should be positioned alongside The Mandalorian, but the New Republic’s enhanced involvement in the latter and the absence of additional forces for pirates in the former could provide a hint. However, since X-Wings are featured in the third installment of the show, it’s plausible that this new Star Wars series may coincide with or even slightly precede The Mandalorian.

In this post-“Return of the Jedi” period, there’s a notable lack of Force users, as shown in “The Mandalorian,” where Grogu is one of the few exceptions and is the main character with Force sensitivity in both “The Mandalorian” and “The Book of Boba Fett.” In “Skeleton Crew,” the Force plays a significant role because Wim and Neel admire Jedi, and they end up working with the lone “Jedi” character in the storyline, who is actually a pirate captain (portrayed by Jude Law) who has been discredited.

As Skeleton Crew marks the end of Star Wars shows for this year, let’s hope 2025 brings us even more thrilling cosmic journeys! The second part of Andor is eagerly awaited, and other exciting events include new episodes from some animated series. There’s also a chance we might get updates on another season of Ahsoka.

Moving forward, the initial Star Wars film of the new decade, titled “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” is set for release in 2026. This could potentially continue the adventures of the title characters, but considering the close timeframe of the upcoming series “Skeleton Crew,” there’s a chance for a crossover. It’s possible that Din Djarin might encounter Silvo (played by Law) or the planet central to the mystery in “Skeleton Crew” could play a role in their journey.
