Skeleton Crew: Did you catch this homage to Pirates of the Caribbean
As a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast who’s spent countless hours exploring galaxies far, far away and even more time at Disney Parks, I can say that “Skeleton Crew” is an absolute delight! The homage to Pirates of the Caribbean, a ride I’ve probably ridden a million times, was a charming touch that sent my nostalgia meter soaring.
The recently released Star Wars series titled “Skeleton Crew” draws from numerous sources for its development. Ranging from Amblin movies to LucasArts video games like the Monkey Island series, it’s filled with Easter eggs that fans will enjoy discovering. One such nod in episode two pays tribute to a popular attraction at Disney Parks.
On the Star Wars Twitter page, Sound Designer David W. Collins talked about a tribute noticed by a fan online. Specifically, in episode two titled “Way, Way Out Past the Barrier,” the four young characters are taken captive by pirates, voiced by Fred Tatasciore and Jaleel White, and locked up. When the cell keys are hung, there’s a recognizable whistling coming from afar for those who know the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at Disney Parks.
Collins agrees, “That’s an exceptional find!” He admits to accidentally whistling through the microphone earlier. As we all watched that particular moment, he exclaimed, “What if we paid tribute to Pirates of the Caribbean?” Port Borgo, in his eyes, mirrored Tortuga from Pirates of the Caribbean, a film he holds dear. In a playful gesture, he whistles the famous pirate tune from the attraction, hoping to summon the dog with the keys.
As Jon Watts and Chris Ford shared their enthusiasm for it, I couldn’t help but feel overjoyed. It was an incredible moment when our creation made it into the final cut. A nod to the past that I’m proud of, and I’m thrilled to know you appreciated it too!

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Is Full of Mystery and Adventure
Skeleton Crew boasts an impressively high rating on Rotten Tomatoes, standing at 95% approval from critics. It shares the same audience score as Andor, both at 87%. The show has been widely praised, particularly for the character of Neel, portrayed by Robert Timothy Smith, who has sparked a dedicated fan base known as the “Neel Nation” online.
The story revolves around four characters: Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), KB (Kyriana Kratter), and Neel. After stumbling upon a mysterious starship, they are transported from their seemingly tranquil home planet At Attin to other parts of the galaxy. However, it soon becomes clear that things aren’t as they appear on their planet. The children uncover secrets revealing it’s actually a legendary world rumored to be filled with treasures. This discovery attracts a band of pirates, including Captain Brutus (Tatasciore) and Vane from the third season of The Mandalorian, portrayed by Marti Matulis. The kids aren’t dealing with their predicament alone as they encounter Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law), a rogue Force user who goes by multiple names, and SM-33 (Nick Frost), the first mate droid. As a team, they strive to help the children make it back home.
