Shogun

I must admit, there have been instances where the portrayal of true crime in TV and movies has become overly exploitative, which is something I’ve never felt comfortable with. However, “Under the Bridge” managed to tackle these sensitive topics with sensitivity and a minimalistic approach to exploitation, while still bringing essential issues to light.

The show narrates the chilling tale of the 1997 murder of Reena Virk, which occurred in a quiet town in British Columbia. It’s adapted from the book of the same title by Rebecca Godfrey.

In “Under the Bridge“, Riley Keough plays Rebecca Godfrey, who goes back to her hometown to share the experiences of girls similar to herself, emphasizing their treatment and its impact on their futures. When Reena disappears, Rebecca assists an old friend, Cam Bentland (Lily Gladstone), a local police officer, in investigating what truly happened to Reena. The situation becomes more intricate as the authorities implicate a group of underprivileged teens for Reena’s murder, who may not have the means or abilities to refute the accusations. One aspect I find slightly disappointing about “The Bear” is that I believe the viewing experience could be significantly enhanced if each episode was rolled out on a weekly basis, rather than having all eight episodes released simultaneously.
