The Split’s Nicola Walker reveals “there’s still love” between Hannah and Nathan

As a seasoned gamer of legal dramas and emotional rollercoasters, I’ve been hooked to “The Split” since its debut. The Defoe family saga has become a staple in my viewing rotation, much like how a certain game character becomes your go-to for every adventure.

The Split star Nicola Walker has teased that “there’s still love” between Hannah and Nathan.

This festive season, the BBC’s legal drama makes its comeback, presenting two fresh installments titled “The Split: Barcelona“. In these episodes, the Defoe family embarks on a trip to the vibrant Spanish city of Barcelona for a cherished family wedding.

During a recent conversation with Digital Spy, the actor delved into the current state of her character’s relationship with ex-spouse Nathan (portrayed by Stephen Mangan), following their decision to part ways in the season three finale.

She shared with us that she truly enjoys portraying these characters, and during filming, there were many conversations between her and her co-star about how captivated they were by the evolving relationship between their characters. Even though they are apart in the storyline, on some deeper level, they remain connected.

They first crossed paths during their college years, continued to know each other throughout the ups and downs that typically occur within a marriage, and unfortunately, their relationship is now over.

However, they have offspring together and share a common past. In the recent occurrences, they are discovering a fresh dynamic in their relationship with one another.

Two years have rolled by since the climactic ending of “The Split” Season 3 (airing back in May 2022), and here I am, a gamer immersed in this fictional world, finding myself single while my old flame Nathan is still going strong with Kate, played by Lara Pulver.

Walker added, “Stephen and I found it amusingly smart how interdependent they are, a connection that deep insiders would recognize.

“There’s still a lot of love there, the relationship has broken down but the love just doesn’t disappear, it’s not possible.”

In the words of Abi Morgan, who penned “The Split”, Hannah and Nathan’s bond was starting to blossom into a “joyful, enduring, friendship that would last a lifetime.

She shared that she was pondering on situations where one has both romantic feelings and a family bond with someone, but what transpires when those dynamics shift, as she conversed with Digital Spy.

Could they manage independently, and transition smoothly into this fresh stage of their lives together or apart, in their respective relationships?

Regarding romantic storylines, enthusiasts of the series got a hint about a potential new love interest for Hannah in the latest trailer for The Split: Barcelona.

In an intriguing twist, Toby Stephens portrays Archie Moore, a legal professional shrouded in enigma, who coincidentally attends the same family wedding as the Defoe clan. However, one may wonder if their paths have crossed before this occasion.

The Premiere: Barcelona will air on BBC One on December 29 and 30 starting at 9pm, and it will be available on iPlayer on December 29 as well.
