Radio veteran Ray Hadley retires on a high as he dominates his final radio ratings in comeback from shock loss

Oh, my dear fellow Aussies and Ray Hadley enthusiasts alike, let me share with you the joyous tidings that have warmed our hearts this festive season! The one, the only, the legendary Ray Hadley has triumphed once again, claiming the coveted number one spot in the Australian radio ratings just before hanging up his headphones for good.

Legendary broadcaster Ray Hadley brought down the curtain on his 42-year radio journey, having reigned supreme in the Australian radio rankings.

In the final radio ratings for the year, the beloved 70-year-old station that offers 2GB of content emerged victorious, securing the top position against all other competitors.

In simpler terms, it was delightful to see the experienced media figure triumph despite falling to third position during the morning time slot in the November poll.

In a surprising defeat, after twenty years without loss, his unparalleled 160-survey tenure came to an end – marking the first time he was bested during this period.

Nevertheless, Hadley reclaimed his throne in December when he managed to secure a remarkable 13.7% audience share, propelling him back to the top position.

The jump was a significant 2.5% increase compared to the November survey, representing a massive victory for Hadley, whose final show prior to retirement aired on December 13th.

Still, Hadley’s victory was close with Smooth FM, who followed very close behind with a 13.1 per cent share.

Following the significant victory, Hadley expressed gratitude towards his audience while expressing his joy about concluding his career at such an elevated level.

On Thursday, Hadley expressed that wrapping up my career and the year in such an impressive manner left me somewhat subdued when we lost. However, after reflecting, I realized it wasn’t a dismal outcome. Reflecting on 20 years spent at the top spot, getting beaten wasn’t so bad.

“We need to honor those who have come before us, and in doing so, be humble whether we win or lose. Since we’ve won 161 out of 162 times in these surveys, that’s how I plan to end my career – as a victor.

On Friday, after four decades of broadcasting, Hadley decided to take off his headphones permanently, coinciding with the emergence of news regarding his retirement intentions.

As a devoted follower, I’m excited to share that come soon, Hadley and his beloved spouse, Sophie Baird, plan to make their way to the Central Coast of New South Wales. They’ve recently acquired a beautiful waterside property there, which they purchased last year, and it seems they will be calling it home shortly.

Living in Dural, a part of Sydney’s northwest, this particular couple is considering putting their townhouse up for sale on the market.

Instead, as reported by The Daily Telegraph, they aren’t planning to depart from the area, but rather intend to buy a new home close to the Castle Hill Country Club.

Previously, the pair decided to let go of their extravagant Gold Coast condo for approximately 2.05 million dollars. This decision came after they had invested in a vacation home at Brisbane Waters back in June.

For the past three years before his retirement, it’s been suggested that Hadley might be considering a relocation to the Central Coast.

After an impressive four-decade career, Headley decided to take off his headphones and step away from the microphone.

Last month, the highly acclaimed 2GB broadcaster shared some surprising news with his audience during a live broadcast, expressing his desire to devote more time to his spouse Sophie, kids, and grandkids.

From modest origins working as a taxi driver in Sydney, he ascended to prominence, sharing a ride with future 2UE news director Mark Collier along the way, eventually earning recognition as a major figure in Australian broadcasting.

For over two decades, I’ve been a staple at the competitive morning slot on a Sydney-based radio station, following my debut in April 2002. Prior to that, I honed my skills as a casual traffic reporter at a rival outlet, 2UE, where I began my career in radio broadcasting.

Known nationwide by sports enthusiasts, this indefatigable announcer has maintained an undefeated streak in commentating on rugby league’s State of Origin matches and the NRL Grand Final. He recently marked his 70th birthday.

Over the course of his illustrious career, Hadley has amassed an impressive 35 Australian Commercial Radio Awards for his contributions to news, current affairs, and sports. This number surpasses that of any other broadcaster, making him a standout figure in the industry. In recognition of his accomplishments, he was inducted into the ACRA Hall of Fame in 2017.

Moreover, in 2002, he received the Medal of the Order of Australia for his contributions to rugby league and charitable endeavors. In 2021, he was also inducted into the Sydney Cricket Ground’s Media Hall of Honor.

‘I achieved far more than I have thought I would,’ he told listeners on Thursday.

He told how his children Dan, Laura, Emma and Sarah, made ‘many sacrifices over the years’ as he pursued his career and it was time to return the favour.

2GB radio personality Mark Levy, affectionately recognized by his audience as the presenter of Wide World of Sports, has been named this week to fill the position previously held by Hadley.
