Fate of Jennifer Love Hewitt’s return to I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise finally revealed
As a die-hard fan of the 90s slasher genre, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia upon hearing the news that Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. are reprising their roles for the latest installment of “I Know What You Did Last Summer.
Following several months of anticipation, Jennifer Love Hewitt has officially announced her reunion with the I Know What You Did Last Summer horror series, marking a return after a gap of 27 years.
On a Friday, the actress, known for portraying Julie James in both the memorable 1997 movie and its sequel from 1998, announced some thrilling news on Instagram.
Hewitt wrote, “There’s always room for a comeback – Julie James is back,” accompanied by a poignant picture of her on the filming location.
The photo shows Hewitt gazing intently at a grubby mirror adorned with menacing sticky notes, presumably placed there by the cold-blooded movie assassin.
With the eagerly awaited sequel set to hit screens on July 18, 2025, I can’t help but hint at your plans for the following summer!
In the upcoming scenario, she’ll once more collaborate on-screen with her initial co-star, Freddie Prinze Jr., known for his role as Ray Bronson. This time, they’ll be joined by a fresh group of actors, which includes Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Madelyn Cline.
The movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” released in October 1997, tells the story of four teenagers who unintentionally run over and kill a fisherman with their vehicle.
Rather than seeking assistance, they choose to hide or dispose of the corpse and swear an oath to keep silent about it forever.
A year on, I found myself and my companions pursued by an enigmatic slayer wielding a hook, boasting that they had seen us escape from the crime we believed was long forgotten.
As a die-hard enthusiast, I can’t help but reminisce about the iconic cast of the original movie. Right alongside David Hewitt and Jason Lee Jr., we had Sarah Michelle Gellar gracing our screens as Helen Shivers, and none other than Ryan Phillippe portraying Barry Cox. What a dream team!
The film was a massive success as it raked in over $125million at the worldwide box office on a modest $17million budget.
Following the success of the original film, a second installment entitled “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” was swiftly given approval for production. The duo of Hewitt and Prinze Jr. reprised their roles, and the movie debuted in cinemas in November 1998.
It was panned by both audiences and critics, with many calling it ‘boring’ and ‘predictable.’
Despite not reaching the level of success of its previous version, it managed to turn a profit by earning approximately $125 million worldwide, with production costs ranging between $25 million and $65 million.
The third movie in the series, “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer,” which came out in 2006, didn’t fare well with viewers and was only released on video. Neither David Prinze Jr. nor Jennifer Hewitt reprised their roles for this film.
The announcement came last year that a new I Know What You Did Last Summer movie is being developed, with director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson on board for the project.
According to earlier reports, the plot is expected to disregard the following sequels and establish a fresh narrative line, as mentioned by ScreenRant.
Production commenced last month in Sydney, Australia, with Prinze Jr. confirmed to return.
In the filming, his wife Sarah Michelle Gellar, who previously starred with him in I Know What You Did Last Summer, was present, but for the sequel, she will not be part of the cast as her character met a tragic end in the initial movie.
For several months, enthusiasts of the renowned horror series have been engaged in discussions over the possibility of Hewitt returning to her legendary character.
This year, the actress looked back on her role as Julie James from I Know What You Did Last Summer that she played earlier in the year.
She shared with Variety that this particular individual holds great significance for her, as the role significantly impacted her career and boosted her self-belief.
During the very same interview, she subtly suggested a possible comeback and disclosed that negotiations were ongoing regarding the sequel’s filming.
At the time, she had not officially signed on for the film.
At age 45, it was incredibly gratifying to be asked to return. It’s not every day that someone thinks of you in this way, especially with all the fresh, talented youngsters around. But being given a chance to reprise my role is really exciting,” Hewitt shared earlier.
Hewitt’s confirmation on Friday comes one day after Gellar sparked rumors of a feud between herself and her former co-star.
In a now-famous video clip that’s been widely shared online, Gellar was questioned by Extra about the potential involvement of Hewitt in the latest adaptation of I Know What You Did Last Summer.
Responding to the query, Sarah gave a taut smile and replied, “I’m not involved in that matter,” before concluding the conversation with a grin and departing.
At the world premiere of her new series Dexter: Original Sin, which is a prequel to the popular Showtime drama Dexter, she conducted the interview during the event’s red carpet ceremony.
A fan posted the exchange to X, formerly known as Twitter, and exclaimed: ‘Look at her face!! She hates her so bad! sksksksk.’
The replies were filled with other X users agreeing with the original poster, remarking that Sarah’s answer ‘seems so shady LOL’ and marveling: ‘Omg that face.’
Instead, fans speculate that Gellar’s seemingly off-guard response could possibly be an attempt to keep the information about Hewitt’s participation under wraps until the formal announcement on Friday.
